well.. i'm getting my tax return soon :D

and plan on buying either a trail-master in san mai III

or....

the laredo bowie

both look very appealing to me

i have the money for both.

the trailmaster will cost me 349.99 canadian

and the laredo bowie will cost me 299.99 canadian

i have the cash for both (hopefully :D)

so which one do u guys suggest?

i decided to post this in the survival forum because:

a) i post here alot
b) i need your guys advice on this from a survival perspective

thanks hope to hear from all of you

As someone who has spent more money than I should have on knives without giving the "why" a lot of thought... let me ask this.

Why do you want a big-honkin-knife? Do you have a specific purpose in mind for it, or are you just wanting something big?

Honestly, for that much money, go with a Busse.

 Im not an owner yet, but an admirer. I've heard enough good stuff about busses to know theyre great :)

but between those two I'd choose the trailmaster. The laredo bowie seems like a cowboy themed knife for civil war re-enactors or something :D

the reason im getting this is because i want a chopper

and i think i'll go with the trailmaster

the reason i was choosing between these two is just cause i've always liked them and i know theres a beef about coldsteel stuff but i own an R1 and have pretty good experience with it so hence why im gonna get the trailmaster

also i live along the coast so i thought the salt-water resistance would be a nice factor.

busse's seem a bit expensive for me i checked their website and the only ones i see are in the 5 inch blade length area

i know many swear by infi but i just like the look feel and experience i've had with the trailmaster

i posted this just cause i was leaning on the fence between the two knives. :D

i was gonna jump on the dog father but didnt have the cash at the time.

thanks for ur opinions guys as always much appreciated

btw i noticed the thor is vg-10 sandwiched between 420.

sounds like the same concept as the san-mai trailmasters

the only thing is i hate the wait for knives... always like going into the shop and handling the knife before i go ahead and buy it (hence why i RARELY buy online).

anyone know of a local dealer (vancouver, bc) which i could go to and try the knife first/?

might make me reconsider

thanks again

Get a Trailmaster, I've never had a bad comment about them. One of my buddies has carried one for the past 4 years in Afghanistan and he loves it.

Have you considered a hatchet as a chopper, coupled with a smaller knife for more "knifey" things?

Only reason I ask is that that's a big chunk of money to spend, and I sometimes wish I hadn't bought some of the ones I own. :o

Edited to add: I'm not advocating going cheap, by the way, I was just going to say that you can get a top-notch hatchet for about $80CDN (GB Wildlife Hatchet) that will probably far outchop a Trailmaster, then spend good money on a smaller knife too.

Get an after-market Camp Tramp and invest the balance in Walton Feed Super Pails of rice and beans. If married, add flowers for the Mrs. to distract from the knife and strife purchases. $0.02 IMHO FWIW :)

I used to be a big bowie knife kinda guy but recently converted to the Hatchet (wetterlings)/SAK/Mora combo. Other than moras and kitchen knives i haven't bought a fixed blade knife in about 6 years, however i have continued to purchase a lot of multitools and pocket-knives, lol.

If i really needed to carry a big knife i'd dig out my old Blackjack Anaconda II. Has anyone here tried the new Blackjack Anaconda II's? If the new ones are like the old ones that would be a knife i would personally recommend.

Really the Falkniven Thor is the only big knife that i've been tempted by recently.

However the Cold Steel trailmaster should be a good choice, the ones i've seen have been very sturdy knives.

funny you mention it foxhole, my current setup is a fiskars hatchet, fiskars retractable saw, and a mora clipper.

also carry a grohmann R4S as a backup knife.

plus my edc which is a swissarmy one hand trekker

that coupled with a firesteel and a tarp and a few other things has kept me very comfortable in the woods.

but i just wanted to get a big chopper for the hell of it since i have the moola to blow :D

I'm not sure if you are being serious or not......if you have that much money there is only one knife and that's a Busse !!!!!

jca21 have you looked at the line of knives by Chris Reeves or the RTAK II for a big chopper. I have several Chris Reeves knives and really like them.
Take care,
Bryan

The trail masters are good knives but the san mai is a little pricey. I have 2 but I paid $150 each. Neverless the are very good strong knives that take a beating and feel great.
