Ok guys need your opinion as always

very true. did i mention im paying in canadian? :D

if that makes any difference...

I totally understand about buying local when possible, for lots of reasons. Especially being able to hold it and see how it balances, how it will ride on your hip/pack, etc. I make a point of it when possible, because I'd rather give my retail markup to a guy who spends his cash and pays his taxes in my town, than to a "faceless" corporation or online merchant. I've found that when a local mom-and-pop store has the same item as an online or mail-order merchant, the higher cost is usually offset by the savings on having it shipped. Of course, if I find a great deal online or at Wally World, I'm not going to pass it up.

Back to your original question, I sincerely think any of the knives these guys have recommended would serve you well, and you should buy the one that fits these criteria:

A: you can get your hands on it
B: you can afford it
C: you have a reasonable expectation it won't fail you
D: you just plain LIKE it

yeah, and I mean as a plus, I dont know if it is for you or not. But I, and hopfully other think its nice to support local buisnesses, even if you have to shell out a little bit more.

supporting my local businesses is actually very important to me even if its by shelling out the few more bux :D

the place i plan to buy it from is warriors and wonders on cambie street in vancouver (for those of you who know the place u will agree with me that the prices are alot more reasonable then HOK)

now... where the hell is my damn tax return? :D

need that moola to buy the knife ^^

thanks for ur input guys

If JC wants a TM he will get one. If he wants it for the sake of owning one then get one.

If he wants a blade for serious use with steel he can trust and a design thats durable and utilitarian he wont get a TM.

For less money he can get 5 times the blade the TM is although there may be a wait for it.

Busse, anything large enough
Swamp Rat, BR, RM, RW,CT
Ranger RD7, RD9
Hell even a Becker BK9 is a better option as far as utility.

JC needs to research and learn about blade quality before dropping that much scratch. I'd start with lifetime warranties and go from there ;). I own CS blades (sold my TM yrs ago) and for the money they are decent but for the amount he is spending there are FAR!!! better options.

My trailmasters way outperform my bk9's. The problem here is not that the trailmasters are not good it is that there are a lot of people who hate cold steel. I hate strider knives so I dont recommend them and I try to talk people out of buying them. I dont go around saying they fail and dont hold up to the task they were made for since I am sure they perform well.

LOL ashtxsniper, wait till you see the "new" anti-Mick Strider rant on the Cold Steel website :jerkit: I'm sure that will open a whole can of worms around here but I'm not having anything to do with it!

garrrrrr

i do like the chris reeve knives.... the holy handle design is top notch but... just doesn't do it for me....

the rtak is very tempting....

seems to fit the 10 inch blade range that i want for chopping...

anyone have any experience with it?

I was looking at the RTAK as well but recently read some very poor reviews on the knife. I think I have decided on a scrap yard dog father for a large blade but I can't figure out if they have any in stock, based on their website.

I want to check out some of the larger Falkniven blades next time I get to a big city.

ya i read some stuff about the RTAK blades flexing due to their length and thickness.

fallknivens are great knives although i dont own any they will be a future addition to my survival collection :D

cheers

I have allready seen the rant. I could care less about the politics of either company. I just dont like Striders designs or there prices.

What I am saying is I have owned and used both and the BK9 is a better blade for what he is using it for.

With all due respect, I disagree entirely. I'm curious, Skammer, why did you sell your TM? How did it fail you? Please be assured, I'm not starting a fight here, just asking your experience with it.
.

The handle is horrid, the blade design is not a good utility shape as it doesn't chop as well. I chipped the blade in several places with hard use. I was always worried about damaging the thin tip, not great confidence for a survival type tool.

It is not a bad blade per say but there are much better options for the money.

I try not to get too specific with knife recommendations as people label you a salesmen. and there are options out there.

YMMV

I also think the handle could be improved. Maybe they could make it bigger. As far as a thin tip all my bk9's have a thinner tip than my trailmasters. The Bk9 is a little better slicer. My trailmasters chops right up there with my fiscars hatchet. Both the becker and trailmaster blades were produced by camillus from the same steel. This being said the trailmaster should be a lot tougher due to its thickness. The sad part is I love both lines of knives. I currently own 12 trailmasters ( 3 san mai, 2 aus8, and 7 carbon v)and 10 Beckers (5 bk9hh's and 5 bk7's). IMHO the Trailmaster is a one of the first knives I would pick for a survival situation.

i had a tm and the handle spun on the tang when i hit a log at a wierd angle and torqued the blade to the left hard. really pissed me off will never own cold steel again i think they are way over priced i am a converted rat fan now but that thor blade looks pretty sweet i may have to that one.

hey jamie can u recommend some good camping and fishing spots on the island for me? i live on the mainland but love going over there to hike camp and fish :D
