OK, I'm not carrying a balisong anymore.

ayzianboy, calm down. It's over. Ease up on the language.

my bad. i just find these ninja wannabes hilarious.

people don't seem to realize that when you stab someone, even in self defense, there are CONSEQUENCES. The idea of bali's is that it demonstrates competence in use of the knife so that it deters them from attacking you further, not to kill them. When you're being attacked with fists, if you whip out a knife to intimidate them and make them go away, fine, but the last thing you want to do is stab them.

Just because you study a certain discipline doesn't mean you have to be bound by outdated traditional tools. Would you go to war with a musket? I happen to find sayoc kali one of the better martial arts, but I don't know what that has to do with butterfly knives.
And you based this knowledge on a cheap Spanish bali that you bought some 10 years ago? You are either 1) don't know the quality of the balisongs, especially the custom ones, on the market today. Or 2) basing your opinion on an outdated and inferior experience. Probably both. That's like driving a Yugo and then proclaiming cars suck. The truth is I'm not using a musket. I'm using the modern combat rifle to use your analogy.

Since you live in Canada, you probably don't have access to the excellent balisongs we have in the States. That's a true shame. Maybe if you got a chance to handle a new BM bali, about a Toyota, you would have a different opinion. Then there are the custom balisongs that I carry, which would equate to a Porsche.

the main purpose of SD knives should be to deter. actual use is only secondary.

when i go jogging at night i carry a microtech socom auto and a spydie karambit. the socom is for that freak chance of when I would actually need it, but most of the time i go for the karambit first, because it just looks wicked and intimidating to everyone and does a very good job convicing the bum with a swiss army knife to go make a quick buck somewhere else.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get out of line or insult anyone with my posts. I'm not saying Bali's are poor quality in design or that noone should take interest in them. Bottom line, what I mean to say, is that there are alot of circumstances where a Bali is not the most practical of tools. I'm also not saying you should shank someone just cuz theyre beating you down. But honestly, how are you gonna put one to use when youre in shall we say, not the most favourable conditions to draw a knife. I don't wanna argue about this anymore, so say whatever. I just hope that you make the right choice of SD carry when you really need it. If not, you won't be arguing about it on the internet ever again, I'll tell you that much right now.

I'll solve this entire argument. What weapon and style works best for SD? The one that works, of course! :)

Simple enough? ;)

Gentlebeings, entertaining as it may be this isn't just in the wrong thread; it's in the wrong forum too. Some of you might want to go over to the tactical forums and pursue this, but if you do I suggest you do some reading there before you do any posting -- do a lot of reading.... I'm reminded of a sig I used to use:

"The world's foremost authorities in every field of human knowledge are active on the net. Are you one of them?"
