Okay, I give up. I'm going to try a Mora.

After some splitting the blade pulled out of the handle and lots of play.

I know this is not the toll for this job but I wanted to get my $10s worth and see what it can do around camp besides cut and whittle. No one get on me about the proper use and how one shouldn't baton with a mora and knife abuse and so on. Scott wanted to see them. I still like moras for food prep any cutting chores and wood work. I usually split with a stout 4" er or Machete anyway. Sorry if this breaks anyones heart. The #2 wood handle has the longest stick tang and the same thing happened to that too.

The 510 is absolutely my favorite mora, and one of my favorite all time knives. I'd absolutely give this one a try. The SWAK (pictured last in your post) is a popular one, thin bladed but a really great slicer. The Triflex Craftsman is about the same but with a thicker blade.

No takers on the 521 over the 510?

I just prefer a good guard on a knife with plastic grips. If I used it for field dressing and that grip got bloody, it would also be pretty durn slick, I'll bet.

top 4 were bought from smkw for a grand total of around $45 . the bottom one is a wahoo killer (fake mora- do not get ) that i found at a flea market for $5. the knives are a marttiini big game hunter -price was $15.99, the other 3 are mora's (2 carbon and one stainless)- price $ 7.99 a piece . I just got these knives and love them !!!! I just ordered two kellems for $11.99 a piece that i want to test against the mora's. I also have a cold steel finn bear that i paid $ 12.99 for and don't like as much as the mora's .

I've never owned a plastic handled one so I don't know anything about them...but I can't see how you can go wrong with a 4" blade on birch handle!

Guyon,

Here is a pic of my 780, I think they are fine for most cutting chores, I am confident that you have a blade or two that can handle heavy work....

Guyan,
I think you should get 2 of each, it would probably still be alot less than your last Busse purchase. This way if you decide you don't like them you can feed them to your FFFBM's.

I bought the Swedish Army one from SMKW and it is a true workhorse. I even filleted a few catfish with it.

Here are about half of my Mora's. I like the Carbon Clipper SS Clipper and 510 really well. It's hard to beat the 2000 though. The four top left are clippers the Blue one is stainless The longer Wood handles one is the Laminated blade model. I got about half at Ragweed Forge and the rest at Smokey Mountain. Both dealers are top notch. IMO

I also like the Frosts 840. It has a nice "sticky" grip.

Just got a Mora 2000 from Ragweed Forge and it is VERY nice.

Another option for finding the basic Mora's at a very good price is a place in KC called Harry Epstein's. I stumbled across it a week or so ago. Here is a link to their website:

I ordered from them and from Ragweed Forge on the same day and both arrived the same day.

PS: Added pictures of some my Mora's

The 510 is my favorite. I've batoned with it without a problem. The cord wrap and leather sheath were done by me. Get a 510 from here: http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html . ragweedforge has a good variety of Moras as well as scandi blades from finland and Norway. But for $10 you can't go wrong with a 510.

I just did a rehandle job that turned out well. So, I think that this one will replace the 510 just so I can see how my handle job holds up. It fits in the same sheath as the 510 as the blades are almost identical.

I'm a Clipper fan myself:thumbup:

I only have one FFBM since I prefer the CGs. However, it does stay hungry. :p

Okay, I think I have an order. I'm partial to carbon, and a lot of the recommendations here are for carbon knives. I'd still like to hear a bit about the differences between Frost carbon and stainless. That said, here's what I picked out to try:

521 (carbon) - similar to the much-recommended 510, but with a bigger blade guard and a slightly wider/longer blade. ($9)

521.jpg

680 (triflex, or differentially tempered carbon) - Triflex Tradesman ($9)

780 (triflex) - Triflex Craftsman ($11)

840MG (carbon) - Clipper in Military Green ($11)

I'm a little nuts about fillet knives. Soooo... I also want to try:

549 (stainless) - fillet knife ($18.25)

Rapala 4 - (stainless) Rapala short fillet knife ($7)

Still deciding if I really want both the 680 and the 780. Leaning a bit toward just the 780.

Thanks for all the input, folks.

I'm a big 780 fan. Never had to baton with it.

I modded mine just a bit and used an old JRE sheath I had around. Its a really good user.

i like the 510 and you can't beat ragweedforge.com for service, try calling and talking to ragnar to place your order seems like a heck of a guy.

The mora is a great budget knife that will easily outslice many knives 10x its price. So many people underestimate them until they use one. Hope you like yours.
