Yea, I'm done EDCing. Don't get me wrong, I'll still collect and contribute here (what I can, anyways), but knives= way to much flak for a NYCer, plus I don't do anything that a SAK (good enough steel for me) in my backpack wont do. (maybe except open blister packs, if anyone knows how, please let me know)

Since my summons, I've taken it easy and went down to a Delica.
Even so, I've heard of at least 6-7 more guys "busted" for knives. One of my friends was even arrested because his record store was selling ink that they weren't supposed to be selling to minors and later charged with carrying a weapon (he was in store property, opening boxes with it)
My job has me walking in and out of metal detectored buildings.
I don't use my Delica much to begin with, just little jobs I can use other tools for

Too much hassle and potential for trouble in NYC for this hobby

Thanks again for everyone's support and insights :)

I live and work in NYC also....could you give me some more details about your troubles (perhaps via PM), as this issue is of great importance to me as an EDC'er here.

Thanks for your time,

Keith

This just blows my mind.

Is this somehow actually against the law or just LEOs being jerks?

Edit: I mean carrying a "weapon" on private property, not selling ink to minors, although that's pretty messed up too.

Carry a multi-tool instead! Very sheeple-friendly and the new Leatherman knives are starting to be actually usable. ;)

Hey, I live in TEXAS and get carded at Wally World for buying Winshield Washer fluid. It contains Methenol, the stuff will kill you, but as the lady at the check out counter said "Thats why we card people":jerkit:
I wonder if I would get carded for buying matches? Maybe hairspray and matches? Rope? Or God Forbid I buy AntiFreeze! That contains some really bad stuff if injested.

Can you carry a screwdriver on your toolbelt in NYC? According to the FBI stastics I have found almost as many people are killed with Screwdrivers as with Steak Knives.

I bet you could buy a chainsaw without bein' carded, GB, don't give up on a great hobby just adjust your EDC, I like the idea of a sheeple friendly Leatherman.

Well this just totally bumms me out. My daughter moves to NYC next month to continue her education at Columbia. Gettin her masters in teaching. She is going to live in morning side I think it is called and she asked me to supply her with a knife to carry. I was going to give he my m SOCOM which would fit her to a "T". Don't know where she will be doing her teaching but obviously a city school most preferrably according to her in Harlem. So should I let her take it or not. She obviously knows she can't carry carry it in school and that wouldn't be what it is for either. Just to get along back and forth on the subway to the University. Thoughts would be appreciated on this subject. keepem sharp

If I lived in NYC I think I'd just carry a V'nox classic, I think it's highly unlikely that would ever be considered a weapon, and should it get confiscated upon entering a courthouse etc. you're out what 10-15 bucks and can go get another one. I'm sure the problem in NYC is that cops are being jerks rather than a problem with the law itself but in the end I think GarageBoy has the right idea it's better to just not be hassle by law enforcement. While a waved Emerson or Spydie, or assisted open knife can be wicked cool and are no problem where I live NO WAY would I think of carrying something like that in NYC. Good luck with it all and maybe they'll someday get the problem resolved with the cops and their understanding of the carry law.

I know CCW doesn't apply to knives but is it possible to legally CCW a handgun in NYC or is it as impossible as I think it would be?

The knife is a nice gesture, but your daughter would probably be better off with the knife AND a good bottle of pepper spray, IMHO.

The guys at Practical Tactical will give you some solid advice.

I used to visit Morningside a lot, and back before I knew anything about knife laws I used to carry a knife clipped to the hammer loop on some of my jeans ... never got hassle for it. I wouldn't worry too much about carrying on Columbia, as long as it's fairly well hidden in pocket, the police don't hassle you much, especially if you're a girl.

I live on Long Island and I've never had a problem with my pocket knife which is visible because I clip it to my pocket. I wonder if there is much of a difference between NYC and Long Island as far as knife laws.

Is pepper spray legal to carry in New York State? My wife was told by a friendly NY state trooper several years ago that the little can she had on her keychain was illegal in NY.

Wow, it looks like NYC is turning into England. I hope it doesn't spread to the rest of the country. Maybe we should build a wall around it to contain the problem-- Escape From New York style.

GB,

I am finding that in the city, or around home I don't need anything other than a SAK or a nice little slip joint. The one handed locking folders don't do anything better. If I need to do something that my SAK cannot handle, I use my Ontario TAK-1 fixed blade. I usually only need that when camping or working outside.

Yea, my adult lawyer buddies have also recommended me to stop carrying. One was working at the DAs office and was arrested for attempted murder because a guy at a bar IDed him as the man who cut him. He happened to have a knife on him at the moment too.

NYS and NYC are like night and day. Funny thing is, campus secuirty never cared about the PMillie, neither did my co workers in school
