Friends for about 20 years now. Main blade is starting to thin out a bit but keeps on cutting.

For my first Old Friends Friday, I dug out the oldest knife I own, a SAK Huntsman from around 1992 or thereabouts:

Over the years, this knife has come on camping trips (and I think an extended backpacking trip, if memory serves), performed a variety of home repairs, whittled (badly), and trimmed Christmas tree trunks to size. It's spent the last few years in our household toolbox, but I pulled it out and gave it a good cleaning just a few minutes ago.

I tried to capture the scratches and tiny chips on the handle, but really I'm surprised how good it looks. I haven't always taken great care of it, and I've used every tool on it over the years -- some of them pretty hard. It's like a little tank, ever dependable and asking nothing of me but to be used well.

It's not my first knife (someone stole that one at camp when I was a kid, and I don't remember the exact model), but it's the oldest knife I still own. I'd forgotten how much I liked this knife.

I picked up this old Alfred Blackwell Lambsfoot about 18 months ago, and it looked like it had been run over by a truck. Some of the bone on the pile side was missing, and the liners had been bent as the blades were pushed into them. Despite that, the old blades, while worn from honest use, were still firm and solid, with absolutely no play. I cleaned up the knife and straightened it up, replaced a small area of missing bone with epoxy, and re-sharpened it (which took no time at all). It's never going to win any beauty contests, but I took to the old knife, and even though I haven't carried it for a while, I still treasure it. I'm going to put it in my pocket again for Old Friends Friday

I mostly carry my GEC 73 these days, but this Kerry Hampton KHnutbuster accompanied me on two of the most important events in my life -- my wedding day and the birth of my daughter. I'm going to continue the tradition and carry it today, as my little girl is graduating from pre-K.

Thanks Jack! When I first got that knife, it sat unused for too many years, till I figured out you just need to guide it closed. My thinking back then was if you can't just let it slam shut, there was something wrong with it. Age and a little patience allowed me to understand the real beauty of the design, I should carry it more often.

Kerry's knives are great, I wish I had never sold mine. My granddaughter graduated from K4 last night, very cute seeing the kids in their cap and gowns.

Save for my first-ever knife, $.99 hardware store counter special that I saved up for a month to buy at seven years old or so (and wish I still had), and my now-vintage Small Tinker bought when I was 10-12 (that I thankfully still have), this is my truest companion of many years:

Victorinox Signature I (Classic), 1987, with tweezers and a removable pen [Victorinox went with a retractable ballpoint pen from the Signature II on].

Here it is in array with my other stalwarts through the years, and one relative newcomer:

Victorinox Signature I; Victorinox Classic purchased when I believed the Signature I to be terminally lost [a couple years later I found it nestled atop molding behind a cabinet during a move]; Wenger Esquire bought for its superior scissors mechanism, but never as beloved (especially after the logo wore off); Victorinox Alox Classic, a surprise gift from the far reaches (pmew) that now rides on my key every day, proving to be most useful in addition to being way cool.

One of the first three knives was in my pocket every day, almost without exception, for almost 25 years, each seeing constant, relied-upon use throughout.

And, truth be known, any of the above would be all the knife I need, still, day-to-most-days

... er, let's not go there.

This is my Grandfather's Old Timer 8OT. It was in his pocket when he passed in '68. It was given to me at that time.

It is the knife that I have owned the longest.
