"Old Knives"

Eric- I have a handful only of TL-29’s - which is always one of those Baloons floating in the Air - even if I only buy a very nice one once every three years - I’m keeping my eyes always open if THAT one comes along- very much like that very nice one you have shared with us.
That’s a real nice one Sir.

oh man!!!!!!!! Charlie, if one was to have a small collection only - your last post would satisfy 😀
Amazing English Jack’s- Stunning!!

I too, feel the allure of an older knife for the job!! Clippers work great, but a pruner is a great adjunct, and fits in your pocket.
I have a fat ceramic rod for touching up curved blades!!
I got a really cool one from black mamba for a song. It’s just perfect in hand for what I want. Air layering trees it might be the perfect tool, and getting to those tough to reach zucchini crowded in the stems it just plain works! I sharpen on stones and I bet I can keep an edge with the chamfered corner I rounded off the side of a 1000 grit shapton with a diamond plate for a recurve I had to sharpen:) tho that knife has gone done the road gifted away.07EAE35F-FE3A-4367-A3E8-5D287AF37241.jpeg

Great Remington electrician's knife, Eric!
Fantastic lineup of English jacks, Charlie! Lovely bone and stag on all, but, I really like the old IXL.
Very nice pearly Cut Co cattle knife, Stahlie11.
That Ulster should do the job nicely, huntnfishin.
Beautiful lineup, Mike. Love them all.

So let's jump to a smaller knife, an older Ulster Pen, or Gents knife! Sort of the antithesis of an English Jack, Ulster put all of their cutlery skill into this little guy!!
The jigging is proportioned to this 3 1/4" knife, and wraps all the way around to the liners!! The cap bolsters and the shield dress it up nicely, but it doesn't stop there;
perfect half-stops, flush in all positions, nicely sprung, lovingly hand sharpened and oiled, this knife reflects old-fashioned care for a treasured object. And, it's a tribute to the effort Dwight Divine put into his cutlery! Of course, both blades are stamped!!Jigged Pen 1.jpgJigged Pen 2.jpgJigged Pen 3.jpgJigged Pen 4.jpg

Waynorth that Ulster pen is divine. Do you use it? Would make a real nice pal and as you say has an air of quality about it.
Similar but different is my newest Rodgers

It's a humble pattern but the execution is fine and we used it today at the picnic.
Thanks Ed! Nice Rodgers yourself - lovely patina!! Looks still in fine shape!!
Lovely little pen knife, Charlie. I love the way the hafting on the some of the older knives is rounded right to the liners, no flat spots.
Very nice Rodgers pen, Ed. Lovely handle material and nicely hafted as well.
Thanks, Dan!! I hope all's well in your neck of the woods!!;)

Welcome home, Mike, although another few days in the outdoors wouldn't go amiss, I'm sure!!
Back to English Jacks, here are two from Camillus!! Poorly scraped/"cleaned", the goodness still shows through!! The bottom knife is a heavier knife, the top one of course with a Washington bolster!!
Sword Brand etch still visible on the lower knife, and a curved stamp on the upper's pen!!

So folks…I have been bitten by old knives lately. My obsession with slippies has evolved over the last decade and changed. From Gec 33s and a couple others to customs and back to Case knives from my youth. Now I have been admiring the early knives (that my elders carried, or so I imagine…) and really like the Case long C stamped 1920-40 era. Intimidated by astronomical prices I waited until something affordable showed itself and I am the new owner of a sub C note special. A two blade jack. Waited like a kid before Christmas and it came today. Granted the tang stamp is a bit worn, the handles are some kind of early synthetic material, and the main blade snap is a bit weaker than the small pen blade - but the blades are full, no wobble at all, and I really like the size and pattern. I wonder why the main blade has softer snap. It’s like a couple 33s I used to own. Mellow and easy, but the smallish pen is perfect. Crisp and with authority. No half stops.
I have no idea what pattern number, as there is no number. Anybody tell me what I got here?
