"Old Knives"

R8shell’s multi is one of the quirkiest I’ve ever seen !!
Thanks!

I absolutely love Whittlers and Jacks, but I find myself drawn to the quirky stuff these days. If it's very old and odd, I'll throw out a bid. Especially if it's made of exotic materials.

This IXL Corn Knife arrived today. Aside from the broken end and pin cracks, it's in pretty good shape.

I think it's ivory. Compared to a Boker in French Ivory Celluloid:

Sure looks like it R8shell !!
I just lurve the font used for
“The IXL Corn Knife”
I notice that the tail of the "R" in Corn crosses the "N" to make an Rx symbol (both knives have a similar font, and the "R" and "S" in "Boker's" do the same thing) Could it be a purposeful reference to the medical use of these knives, or am I just overthinking it?

Thanks for the links; I know what I'll be reading this evening!

More quirky fun!

This is an ivory grafting knife that someone ground the blade shape into a quill knife. It's got a lot of blade wobble, but I'm afraid to try peening the pivot. That's probably how the ends get broken off of so many ivory shadow patterns like my corn knife.

I'm trying to decipher the tang stamp. It's a clover with letters in the leaves: ?NO
If that letter I can't make out is a C or a K, it could mean "N. Cutlery Co." or "N. Knife Co." Any suggestions?

Always great to see Gev posting- one of our Class acts that's for sure! also great to see Primble posting again to- welcome back my friend.

R8shell, Nice Old Corn Knives- No I wouldn't try to Peen the Ivory Knife- on the best constructed Knives in Humid / Moisture Conditions over time will make Ivory move- against those Pins ( that have NO movement) - we will always see Cracking.
Those are pretty cool old Corn Knives for sure.

Speaking of Ivory, I picked up this Old Eye Witness Ivory Grafting Knife, hard to pick up here in New Zealand that's for sure!

Oh, that's a very nice example. No chips and a full blade. 👍
Speaking of things that are a little different R8shell, here's a older J.R Fixed Blade- more of a Lino Workman's Knife, nothing special really, but from one of the better Sheffield firms so I picked it up :)
