"Old Knives"

That one I deem one of the most pleasing finds of mine. Rob Klaas, Ohligs, Solingen on the mark side, two cranes (kissing cranes) on the pile side.

As usual, I keep find knives that can't be properly dated using both Goins and Levine, lol. Robert Klaas is a famous maker, but still I couldn't narrow it down at leas to a decade or so. No info on when they used short "Rob" instead of "Robert", nor the cranes look identical to any pictured iteration of 'em.

Beautiful find! Congrats! I'm puzzled with the attribution here: swell end (or unequal ends?) balloon frame, three blades that doesn't match nor stockman, nor whittler config. What's the springs construction?

Thanks, they are not your traditional whittler, they are unique and probably called whittler due to the blade combination, coping, pen and clip. 2 spring construction not split.

I'm afraid I can't help with the date of your knife, but here's one that's similar.
It's got an even weirder abbreviation: ROBT
It's a mystery to me.

Nice knife, Augie!!! A non-split spring whittler!!!

Here is a similar knife, a very early Empire from the 18th century!!!! You can tell by the W.Winsted marking (West Winsted) used before the two towns were incorporated together into (now) Winsted CT. Three-blade with carpenter blades in a swell-center handle!!!Swell center whitt 1.jpgSwell center whitt 3.jpgSwell center whitt 2.jpg

Camillus called it a Carpenters Whittler

I got some new production Robert Klaas knives in the early 90s and the tangs are stamped Robt like R8shell’s.
