"Old Knives"

A quick phone picture of a New York Knife Company lockback I recently picked up. It's 4.5 closed. Doesn't look like it was carried but there are a few tiny sharpening marks on the shield side of the blade.

Man that's a nice old knife, Mike! That bone looks great and the cut swedge on the blade looks nice and clean. Nice find!

Wonderful knife, a big one too! What kind of age is it? I like the unusual looking shield, suits the knife completely.

Thanks, Will

Thanks Duncan and Will. NYK Co. was in business in Walden, N.Y. from 1856 to 1931. I Googled the company name on the blade etch and it looks like it was in business from around the 1918s to 1920s before slightly changing its name to something else in 1928.

A great find on that lockback!

I did have a question, in the bottom picture with the blade closed, in the locktap recess, is that shadow, or is the bottom of the lock bar visible? Just curious from a maker's eye, a great knife all the way around.

Thanks for the nice comment on the lockback, Ken. That is the bottom of the lock bar in the recess. I hadn't noticed it before. Your comment made me mess with the lock some more. The top of the lock bar is almost flush with the bottom of the recess when opening before it locks in.

It may not seem like much, but it is to me.
It is my first NY Knife co. Very well made, still has a lot of life left.
If anyone can assist in a date I would be very grateful.

The main blade on that NYK Co. cattle knife looks very full. A very nice knife and pattern. Is there a pattern number on it?

I also like the PAL EO.
