"Old Knives"

I don`t recall seeing a round shield turned to read along the length of the handle on an old knife. A bar or gimp shield reads horizontally but not a round shield to my recollection.

The ding you are seeing in the bone is probably why the shield moved, could have been dropped or struck with something.

Hi there Millerbro, I haven't seen enough Pals to argue with Bernard :D. Re the shield moving, I honestly think it was put in the way it sits. If you look at the pic of the shield just below the horizontal centre on the right side you can see the ding in the shield and that the bone matches perfectly to the ding. The shield is mostly sunk and the bone fits right into the indentation. That's another reason for me thinking it was a workmans knife possibly. It's a nice piece of cutlery history whatever the story.

Thanks and best regards

Robin

Glenn, either one of those would have been a steal by themselves for $20! I certainly wouldn't be ashamed to post that Miller Bros.

I recently acquired this 2 7/8" pearl handled three blade Terrier Cutlery Co. whittler made by Robeson between 1910 and 1916.

At the same time, I was trying to acquire this 3" Terrier bone handled whittler, but I was outbid.

This knife now belongs to somebody, but not me.

I'm going to post photos for the sake of knife posterity.

That pearl is something else!

Beautiful...

Charlie, if I knew you were bidding, I would have bowed out - I am the culprit!
The condition made me do it!

Well, Charlie. Congratulations on that one.

I did wait a bit to give the new owner a chance to post his new knife. Hope you don't think I jumped the gun on you.

It's a beautiful knife.

BTW; Did you see the small Robeson harness jack? It was built on the same frame as your little one, but had a spear master, instead of the clip like yours.

Someone else, a new bidder with zero feedback, bought that one.

Charlie (either one), the jigging on the Terrier bone piece is unique to my eyes, any idea what it's called? It looks great!

Yeah. It's called "Beautiful".

Seriously, it is old Robeson bone from the very early 1900's, but it has experienced zero wear. It's just very crisp. No smoothing of the cut edges. No fading, either.

Pretty stuff, isn't it?

Among the very best, I'd say. It has almost a corn cob look to it, with the wavy rows, but it's the depth and crispness that sets it apart.

I really like the Terrier knives that Robeson produced. They are of high quality, from a time, 1910 - 1916, when Robeson was one of the very best American cutlery companies and they are hard to find in great condition.

I may get out of the Robeson business some day, but I think I'll stick with the Terriers to the very end.

Looks GREAT! You always have the best...

Well, Charlie. Congratulations on that one. If you feel really guilty, just let me buy it for my high bid.<g>

Missed the HJ completely, Charlie! Thanks for the PM!

Always hankered after a nice Bullet knife, especially an 1123 - finally lucked out!!

I'll second what Campbell wrote, because he's a lawyer, a lover of Remgingtons and spot on.

When does the museum open Charlie?

A one knife museum - cool!!

I find it hard to argue with Campbell also! He makes sure he's right, then goes ahead!!

Some great person said that's what you should do. Who??

Yes! I'm surprised it lasted that long. Hard to find in that shape!
