"Old Knives"

Charlie, that's a beautiful knife.

I think Davy Crockett was responsible for that particular bit of wisdom you quoted.

Here are photos of the Robeson harness jack that was recently sold on a popular internet auction site.

This knife sold for $280.00.

Ahh! Davy Crockett! Born on a mountain top in Tennessee!
Maybe that's why Gurus seem to congregate at the peaks??
Thanks Charlie - get my email?

I still can't believe how nice that Remington Bullet is Charlie! Wonderful piece of history, In
such wonderful condition... Lord help me!

Gevonovich, It's good to see some more old ebony.

Those photos are terrible! I wonder if it would have brought even more if had been better photographed.

That particular seller has listed some beautiful knives lately, but his photos are not very good. His descriptions, however, are spot-on. He tells the truth and doesn't exagerate a knife's condition. I'd buy from him any time.

Charlie, yes I did. I'll respond shortly.

Charlie, I looked up the auction and seller. I've actually bought from him before (got a sweet deal too). It's a shame that he doesn't use better lighting... or a scanner.

I agree. He could do a bit better . . . .He'd do a lot better if he read BF!! Maybe he does . . . . . .

If he does... Thank you for the sweet deals! ...P.S. Please use natural light... like indirect sunlight from a window or outside. Thank you. ;)

Here is Winchester I got recently, it has stag scales that are either polished or pocket worn. What got me in this knife is the swedges on both blades and the serpentine shape (would you call ir sawbelly?). Anyway I would like to have your opinion weather it is an original vintage Winchester and about it age, and any other comment is ofcourse welcome :)

Mike, I think it's a premium double-end jack. The definition of a sowbelly is basically a round bolster (not square) stockman with a really big curve. Your knife doesn't match since it has two blades and square bolsters and it doesn't have the big curve. I have a few two-blade knives built using sowbelly parts but they are technically premium double-end jacks since they don't have three blades. You might ask BRL about the authenticity. Can you photo the springs with the blades open, focusing on the the junction of the springs and the blades? The pin on the clip blade looks peened and partially sanded but not finished. I can't tell if it's a replacement... the additional photos might help... maybe it was it was tightened up a bit by the prior owner. What is the length closed? Is it 3 1/2" inches?

Thanks Jake for clearing it out. I took some more photos per your suggestion, The spring is flush with the blades, pic 2 show some mismatch between the pen blade and the spring, something I saw only through the macro photo, Pic 3 shows the catch bit on the pen blade

The pin is my unfinished peening job, the blade had some side play which I tightened.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

My double-end premium jacks also have a single spring and catch bit. Nice and slim! Are you going to tote this one?

I don't have my books with me but according to Price's Guide, Winchester made knives 1919-1942. Page 465 has a nice summary. You can read it in the limited preview: http://books.google.com/books?id=ko...ed=0CDQQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=winchester&f=false
The book lists a lot of the pattern numbers but unfortunately skips from 2988 to 2990.

Thanks Jake, yes it's nice and slim I can hardly feel it in my pocket. This one will join the rotation for a while till I decide weather to keep it or let it go.
