"Old Knives"

Has the look of a Cattaraugus. Grooved bone and long and short pulls.
Here's a one you don't see every day. Pine Knot (made for Belknap) toenail recently acquired by Tony Bose. Pictures by Kerry Hampton.

That's a beauty Navin! I tell ya, that old Case redbone is hard stuff to beat... Thanks for sharing!

I agree, that Case red bone ,especially with a little pocket wear is beautiful(and even more special, since it was Papaw's pocket) Navin.

That Wharcliffe frame gets me,lovely, lovely knife Chouse.

I have no idea how old this is, but it is not your ordinary Craftsman knife, as these pictures show. I have never seen another knife of any make with massive stag like this.

I suspect this was a composition handled knife that was recovered with customized stag.

It appears as a carpenters whittler that is about 3 7/8",my guess.

You are right about the length, and I agree that it may be a re-handled knife. Nonetheless, it is so drop-dead gorgeous and feels so good in the hand I am madly in love with it.:emmersed::love_heart:

If it was rehafted then I wonder if the bolsters were modified as well. Double grooved bolsters on a Craftsman knife strikes me as odd.

Impressive stag in any case. A true handful.

Possibly Lyle, but I have seen, and owned a few untouched factory knives that have had the same thickness, one even thicker! - it gets too bulky after awhile, I think that the knife is factory scales-what are you seeing that makes you think its been re-handled? ( please don't take this question as a challenge, I am genuinely interested as it looks good to me )

I meant no disrespect dma,it is worth more and more striking as is. I understand your love of it,this pattern was my first love.I have about 14 or 16 of them.I owned a Craftsman like yours with stagalon covers once,it also had ringed bolsters, wish I had kept it to go with the others.

It was like this Craftsman 9554 that sold on that auction site a couple weeks ago, which is the same number as yours. No worries Campbell,I should be plainer about my thoughts,I expect people to read my mind.:)

I guess they could of made it in stag, but I have not seen it.I have seen a Craftsman stockman in a Japanese stag, which was not as nice as stag as dma's.Those are nice covers.

Howdy Lyle, I doubt that anyone could take any of your posts as disrespectful!, as you are one heck of a great guy, and thank you for the informative answer, I too have owned Craftsman knives ( and I think they are darned good knives too imo ), and not seen any with Stag as such.
The knife just looks so good!

I don't know, but the one I had was like a Schrade 804 carpenter whittler, without the saber grind master..Those stagalon handles should give it away for someone.I have seen Westerns like it also.

All of the ones I have are Case '80 patterns.I would like to have a nice 804,been lookin'.

No disrespect taken. I paid a grand total of $75 plus shipping for the knife, and the stag alone is worth that to me. In fact, I find it so striking that I might having custom stag handles put on a knife in the future. I personally find it hard to believe that this would be factory, but the double fluted bolsters are the first I have seen on a Craftsman knife. I only wish I knew the history of this little beauty.

Craftsman had those 9554 Carpenter Whittlers made back in the 1960's or 1970's I believe. Probably by Schrade and they are definitely original handles. There were other patterns handled with that same material too, etched, and had the same shield. Here is a picture of a stockman, with the original box and pamplet.

Same Carpenters whittler with the etch.
