"Old Knives"

By the way Mr Primble- that Hammer is just superb. Gorgeous Bone.

Much appreciated Duncan and I totally agree with Barry's comment concerning your cutlery appetite ! ;):D

Hi, y'all,
I'd just like to say that this thread is the reason that I joined bladeforums in the first place. Thank you, waynorth, primble, cnoyes, VCM3, and all the other wonderful gentlemen(and ladies) who have contributed to this wonderful little treasure trove of information and eye candy. I may post some of my more elderly knives here later, though they will pale in comparison to the ones posted previously.

Thank you Philbird and you might as well jump on in - I finally did, a little while back, after many months of just browsing this thread.

I can appreciate a "good picture" , but, it really is your "old knife" that I want to see. ;):):D

Yup, there are some real gems here, knives and good folk.

I gotta get back in the ball and find some more.

Schrade Cutlery Co., Walden, N.Y., bone handled bare-head jack knife, three and five eighths inches closed, circa 1917-1946 tang stamp. ;)

The main blade is pretty full on this ole knife. The pen blade is well used - I had to lower her a bit . . . a very small bit at a time. ;)

The bone is crack free.

Still a knife with some nice character, in my opinion. :)

That is one fantastic NYKC! It screams Sheffield, which is not unusual as many in the cutlery trade in the US at that time came from Sheffield. A really outstanding piece!

Here is a completely different NYKC, Walden, Hammer-Brand design/feel that probably dates to the very end of their era. No old world charm here!

Much appreciated Brad! When I first got it, I could see the possibilities, but, it was filthy dirty. I liked her a lot better after the clean-up. ;):)

Looks like they might have tried using "the new material of the time" on the scales, but, the ole knife has some nice full blades. That spiral punch blade (excuse the blade description - I am not a cutler and that is probably not what they might call it) looks really useful and is nice to see!:)

The one I would call a Schrade Cut Co....not a Schrade Walden? Just want to clarify my understanding. And boy of boy is she nice looking!!

Thank you Gevo - I like her looks too! :D I have the tang stamp-date illustrations for Schrade and just assumed it to be a Schrade Walden, however, I am pretty well educated on older Case knives and probably "dumb" when it comes to some of the other fine old knife companies. I edited my initial post to reflect my trust in you. ;):D

Would you say the ones circled in orange are Schrade-Waldens ?

Have a good day!

I'll put mine in the pocket (actually belt sheath) and tote her today. ;):D

Is mine similar to your "fire knife" ???

Yes, it is the same model knife, in my opinion. Mine was made for Shapleigh Hardware Co. I have another in ebony of a slightly different model ( not a barehead) that is a Cut Co.

Both of those knives are wonderful Gevo - they have such great character!!!

I also searched a bit and read where the Schrade-Walden name began in 1946. I like to read on the history of these old companies. Thanks for your reply on the name change and I think I might be on the same page now. :)

Seconds on "can't wait" Mike and I appreciate your comments. :D

It's that disease that catching me whenever I reduce the collection too much... :D

That could be similar to my disease, where I occasionally sell one, only to buy three more?? :D:D

Much appreciated chuko!

It took a few hours of cleaning to get it there, but, well worth the effort. :)

I have one other old NYK that I will photograph and post in the near future. ;)

I don't have much to share in this thread, but I sure like to see the great knives you guys post. Here is one I just picked up.
