I had once a peanuts collection that included a Primble with a star stamps, I made a research and came up with this Boker info. I don't have the source of this info but I found this interesting thread http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com...=179975&hilit=Primble+with+star+stamp#p179975
and also here http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/7101332/John_Primble_pocket_knives , So also Camillus is a possibility although the construction reminds me of Boker.
Mike

Mike,

I had read the lower link info before and the top thread you linked kind of leaves it up in the air, as well as the link I supplied earlier. Today - I looked at my three Primbles with the star on the back of the tang and they all look very much like they could be Boker made. Paul's Barlow also looks like Boker tooling for the blades.

I am now leaning more and more toward the star meaning Boker.

I was hoping, when I asked, that maybe you had something more definitive, if star validation information exists.

This might have been the best part I read: :D

"I think there have been numerous cutlery companies that have made the Primble brand knives under contract. I've heard Schrade made the one's with the stars above the pattern number. I've also heard Camillus as well as Boker did. I think I recall reading that Case made a select few patterns and put the Primble name on them at one time. I have some Primble knives that look exactly like Boker knives, but I also have some Boker knives that look exactly like some Camillus knives. The only way to tell them apart is by the tang stamps. Round and round it goes, who made what for who, nobody knows.":confused::eek::eek::D

Thank you for your kind reply and trying to help, Mike.:)

I have always liked every knife I see from Christopher Johnsone, Great knife S-K! Those scales are stunning!

Mike - thank you for those links - In hope you dont mind I have stored them for future use - trying to find time to look through Jacks fantastic Thread right now :-)

Adee - once again, lovely Sheffield, we dont see many Ibbersons this way - always looking - Jack sent me a nice one - a treasured wee example!

s-k, what a stunning knife, the bone, the bolsters and blade---WOW:thumbup:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys/Gals, does anyone know if Boker made knives for Remington or vise versa? There is one particular pattern that is dead on between the two ,not uncommon for different knife companies to make similar knives, this I know, but the Remington and Boker Jacks were SPOT ON. Jack Black owns the knife below...I have seen this EXACT pattern from Remington in both a Clip and a Spear just like Jacks;)

Sorry for the BAD pictures but the knives were exact size, pin placement, shield and same rat tail bolsters. I ask because I've always wondered:o

xceptnl ... the Sword Brand looks very usable. Nice photo.

smiling-knife ... great looking barlow. I don't know that maker but the flag tang stamp looks familiar. I love tang stamps. Keep 'em coming s-k.

Campbellclanman ... Ibbersons don't seem to come to the surface much here either. I think I have two only and you've seem them both. They both operate like clockwork.

Here is my one and only American knife [apart from a few Rough Riders] and my one and only Barlow. A CAMCO. 3 1/2 ins closed. I got it last week. I don't think it will improve much. I don't know how old it is.

This is Christopher Johnson Barlow.

Very nice old Barlow with beautiful handles.:)

Really nice Remington Paul - would like to see more pics of it in the future.;)

There are some people that read knife history on the net and claim it is full of errors and they are probably right.

There are other people who read books and claim they are full of errors and they are probably right.

One thing for sure, there was absolutely LESS information being passed to others in the heyday of books.

I think there was quite a bit of shenanigans going on between those old knife companies, back in the day!!

I often wonder if those same people would be dying laughing at all of us for trying to figure it out today.:confused::rolleyes:

I would wager a bet that those companies did not want the public to find out who made what, rather accept that a Remington or Primble or Shapleigh knife was just what the stamp said.

You know the old saying - "If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, it's a duck" ;):D:D

@ Primble, you are correct in the mask of mystery analogy Primble:thumbup: I have to do some back tracking as I think stitch, aka Pete had mentioned the Boker/Remington connection?

s-k, your knives are a pleasure to view:thumbup:

Jack, thank you for posting up the Boker picture, I'm going to see of I can locate a Remington picture to compare and if possible confirm my suspicions?

I looked at the back tang of all of my John Primbles knives and discovered that I have four of the Belknap HDW. & MFG. Co. knives with the star on the back of the tang. I have spent a considerable amount of time researching info on the web the past few nights and most specifically related to the star stamps and also Boker Co. Here are the knives in my cabinet that have the star and I feel pretty certain now that the star does indeed mean Boker made, although there are some smoke screens which try to cloud the truth.

Late tonight, I ran across an old 1972 Boker catalog and found three of these knives made for Primble were identical and listed in the Boker catalog. The Harness Jack beside the stockman on the top row was absent from the catalog. I believe the HJ to be a bit older than the others and that may explain why it was not in the Boker catalog. I even found the Boker display cabinet I bought the other day listed in that 1972 catalog.

As I read many articles and forum posts in knife related forums, the large majority believed Boker to be responsible for the star on the tang knives for Primble, only a few believed them to be made by Camillus.

The catalog clinched it for me and I feel pretty comfortable that Boker was responsible for the star stamped Belknap HDW. & MFG. Co. John Primbles.

I had also noticed on the Primble Barlow that Paul posted, which also has the star stamp, the blades looked very similar to Boker made blades.

Paul - I noticed while reading some Boker history, that some Boker employees were hired away to Remington and that some of the Boker knife patterns made their way into Remington catalogs shortly afterwards. Also - Pete is known to have Boker info that most of us don't have. ;)

Primble, interesting investigative work my friend:thumbup: The hunt, digging, investigating, trading and buying all culminates to a fantastic passion that in itself produces amazing collections but more amazing are the stories, memories and friendship that truly last a lifetime;):)

I marvel at your wonderful collection every time I see it:thumbup::cool:

This Ibberson advertises Bentley’s Oyster’s of London, established 1916, with the separate addresses where 2 Bentley’s Oyster Bars can still be found, in Piccadilly and Mayfair.

The ibberson is a beauty, my friend! I just love the tang stamp on these old Sheffield knives:thumbup:

I wonder what the two long pointy implements on the one side of your Victorian knife are? One I believe one to be a nail file and and the other I would guess is a pipe cleaner?
