Good question Brad, Hopefully someone will have a definitive answer. I'm afraid I don't know myself, and wish my old granny was alive so I could just ring her and ask her. My guess would be it was engraved in a similar way to metal, though possibly with more forgiving tools. I think those old cutlers had been doing this sort of thing so long that they knew all the tricks, and were experts at it.

Nice Ibberson penknife ADEE. Firth Stainless blades dates it to the interwar period.

I like the Remington Jamie.

This stout Joseph Elliot & Sons jack knife is from the early 1900s.

ADEE, yes it is quite slender. About as svelte as a 4" stockman gets. Here is another shot with the blades all out.

Thanks Jack. That may have me pointed in the right direction. Only thing is, those are mostly about carving. I am looking more toward the engraving side. Maybe carving/engraving are the same in this case. More research.....

Wow..... I just cant get over this Thread, and the people who contribute !
