"Old Knives"

Yeah, that is great lookin knife, Paul! Very hard to find in that condition. You could go to 10 different knife shows and might see 3 of this quality. If you're lucky.

Indeed a wonderful knife you got there, Paul. :)

It seems to be an ancestor of our BF Forum Knife 2011. The jigging, the blades and that wonderful shield!!!!! Man man man... plain awesome ol' beauty!

Here is an original 1906 Tuna Valley pearl ladies knife. Made in Germany and brought in to Bradford, PA, with early ties to Case Brothers. This is my grandfather's knife.

Here's a tape measure (with knife content) similar to Perry's...

Thank you Perry, I appreciate your insight/knowledge on any and all knives but if you have some approx dates on this one please let me know:thumbup::)

Paul, another stunning knife, the bone jigging is just beautiful. Well done
Mike

Thank you as well Mike, that coming from you is very much appreciated as you have a tremendous collection of vintage beauties also:thumbup:

Andi, I totally agree, I posted the picture above of a vintage tape measure with the 2011 forum knife and in hand they are VERY similar---I haven't forgot about or PM conversation my friend---still working on it;)

Here's what I know, Paul. 1856 to 1931, now that being said, NYKC added the Hammer stamp in 1882. So this narrows it down from 1882 to 1931. My guess would be probably round the 19teens to 20s but only a guess. George Schrade was an idea man and started a lot of these companies. Hammer Brand later, in 1936 was used by Imperial and these knives were the cheaper shell handle cells, like I have on the display cards.

Here's the difference, which you may or may not be able to see in these pics, Paul.
First pic showing the NYKC/Hammer stamps.

This pic showing the Hammer Brand stamp, later owned by Imperial.

Now, when you want to get into dating the Hammer Brand knives by Imperial, that's a whole other kettle of fish.

And here's one of the NYKC/HAMMER stamped Barlows of mine.

Thank you Perry:thumbup: I see what your saying about the stamps and the change they undertook. I'm taken by the shell knives as well because they were used by the working man:thumbup:

Really nice Jack and Barlow!!! Those old shell knives take & took a great edge. To me there's something very intriguing about an inexpensive working class knife. No thought was really given to them but simply looked upon as a working cutting tool. Some people dismiss them as junk and they are quite the opposite.

I've come across many that were very SOLID and sharp, just not fancy.

Thanks again for the info Perry:thumbup:

My pleasure, Paul! You're right, they were reliable. While not the sexiest or most attractive looking, they are still here today and still were made using great steel.

Thanks for the info Paul, that's given me something else to look out for! ;) I found a really old padlock a couple of years back, was on my way home, when I bumped into a neighbour with his two boys, and I gave it to the kids. He told me they were still playing with it six months later! :D

Loving your pics Perry

Thank you so much, Jack! Just trying to put something together that I would want to look at.

Perry

Beautiful Tuna Valley, Rookie. Paul, great NYK Hammer Brand. Perry, nice pics of great knives. Nice comparison of the NYK Hammer Brand and the Imperial Hammer Brand. Here is my only NYK Hammer Brand. Also, in keeping with the Joseph Rodgers theme a couple of pages back, here is my only Joseph Rodgers. I assume G crown R is referring to George VI who reigned from 1936 to 1952. The square kicks and iron bolsters and liners lead me to believe that this is from the earlier part of his reign. Sorry, they are posted in opposite order to my descriptions.
