"Old Knives"

Picked up a junk lot of old knives recently, these 2 were in there, a Shrade Walden NY with a broken handle and a LF&C. Both knives have seen a lot of use and been over sharpened but they took an edge very easily and are very sharp and usable.

I think I'm almost finished de-gunking this old Miller Bros. It's incredible what a few applications of WD-40 can do to improve the walk and talk of a knife.

Thanks Jack. As I gain experience I'm starting to understand the draw of these old, vintage users.

I try not to look to hard inside a lot of my old knives. Some of them have enough muck in there to make a man nauseous!

True that. When I find one with delrin scales (too risky for bone) I use my friend's ultrasonic cleaner. It's fun in a morbid way to watch fifty years worth of wd-40 and pocket lint come floating up like a lava lamp. :D

Probably a good idea.

I think this one is nearly done. It's almost clean-ish. The oil that comes out after filling up the channel is pretty clear now.

" This Ulster was posted here a few years back in detail. The other day a friend asked me for scans of it, so I am sending them to you too. The knife is near new, with some blade scratches that look much worse in the scans, most of the original finish is there underneath. This knife is larger than it might appear, at
about 4 5/8" closed, built approx. 1900 - 1920. Shown with some other larger cousins you have seen before, and with some giant friends I haven't taken the time to scan yet. One of these days.... "

Above is the note I got with these scans.

Here's the eye candy.........

Wow! That's a treasure trove, Vince. I love that old dirk!

Wow, some real beauties in that bunch! Must have taken a while to accumulate a crew of old stags like that. Thanks Vince!!!

Beauties all Vince, thanks for sharing them with us :)

These old knives have so much character. They are like time portals to a simpler time, that I kind of wish I was in...lol. I dream of one day stopping by an old couple's yard sale and finding an old beat up tool box filled with old knives...pretty sad considering I'm only 29 lol.

^HH, your dream isn't sad, in fact probably common around these parts.:D You have to hunt, go find 'em. Kind of like catching a muskie, it takes a 1000 casts, they're not going to jump in the boat!
