"Old Knives"

Robeson certainly used an "Indian Trail" style of jigged bone. Whether it was supplied to them by Rogers Bone, I cannot unequivocally say, but there are documented associations between the two companies.

I sometimes get the impression there are slight differences in the Indian Trail used by Cattaraugus and Robeson, but they might well have been the same product.

Here are some examples:

My Harrison Brothers & Howson Admiralty Pattern 301.

Thanks Gev, the paper had been used to line an old cardboard box and is very fragile and just falling apart I'm afraid. By coincidence, the guy who gave it to me was the same market-trader who I bought the 301 off 2 or 3 years back

Real nice collection of Joseph Rodgers knives, Jack!
That long "Elephant" is especially cool!;)

Thanks Charlie, I have a few more around. I thought that was elephant too when I bought it with several other Rodgers knives, was trying not to gawp at it too much as I was getting a bargain ;) Turned out to be white bone, but still an interesting old knife I think (if a bit big for EDC!) :o

Anyone have any old bowie style knives with GCCO 371 printed near the handle? I have one, picture forthcoming, but not sure if these were made in Solingen.

I uploaded a pic, but butt of the knife has an eagle head on it. Looks to be a stag handle as well.

Charlie beat me to it Jack- with the comment on the Ivory - thats a great looking knife! that Smooth White Whittler is a beautiful knife as well, man I love that Double Rats Tailed Bolster on that big Blade Sheepsfoot :thumbup:
So when is the Jack Black section of the Sheffield Museum ( next to Stans Shop of Course ) going to open up?

That Harrisons is such a great knife, I still remember the day when you showed us what you found - the state it was in - and now the magnificence it shows after a nice sensible clean!!!

I have owned many of them, not now though GCCO was a merchant / Importer not an actual Cutler, Gutmann contracted Solingen Cutlers such as Linder, also Italian knives as well!
Like Sheffield, Solingen Cutlers were by the many.
There were thousands of Solingen knives quite literally that sported the Eagle Pommel, and your knife will be Stag - Solingen Cutlers seemed to have a never ending supply of - at times stunning Stag.

EDIT: I just saw your added link for the photo,
Your knife is a 70's Japanese knife - a direct copy of the Solingens ( whom often took many features and replicated them from the Nazi Weaponry - which were stunning pieces themselves ).
Note the criss-cross direction of the Bone - your handle is not Stag it is Bone imitation of Stag - The Pommel is an attempt to replicate the German Pommel, but the Japanese didnt quite get there with these attempts.

Jack, the J.R. ivory shadow Senator you posted above appears to not have cut outs for easy access to the nail nicks. Is this so ? or can i not see them due to slight rotation of the knife ?
And i would like to see a pic, blade open, of the long ivory J.R. single blade. Is it a Fruit Sampler ?
thanks, cheerio, kj

Thank you for the nice examples, Charlie!

Some very nice Sheffield knives, Jack! Unfortunately, I don't have many from Sheffield. This one is my favorite. It's a military plier knife... IIRC... the model # is P1633.

BRL gave me this catalog scan...

Thank you, Charles. It's a heavy and well built knife and it appears to be in original uncleaned condition. It's very well preserved.

Thanks a lot Duncan, I'd gladly donate every knife I own to the museum if they'd put one tenth of them on display - they must have thousands gathering dust out of sight as it is! Yes, that was a happy day for me when I found that 301 my friend :)
