If I am not mistaken, American was a cutlery formed by disgruntled Empire employees, after the Empire cutlery was sold, ca. 1919. It was a reprise of American Knife Co. that closed in 1911, also in Connecticut.
Interesting piece, John!

Thank You Dan.
I didn't know Simmons made knives in the US and Germany... so, is it the same brand?
That Keen Kutter Hand Hammered Blade and lettering is very nice, looking a bit like some engraved old saxophone bell.:)
Cool tang stamps R8Shell, Dan and Augie!
Mike, interesting to see this old Schrade pattern, very nice frame and jigging!

The middle knife is an Empire Saddlehorn - very distinctive!
The right-hand knife is an American Cutlery co, Winsted. I suspect the cutlers who left Empire, brought a few patterns with them!! Ahem!!

Wow! Augie what a fantastic haul. Just a great day. The Deight Devone Uldter is a pure Stunner. I can find the words to match that absolutely beautiful HSB Fixed Blade my friend.
I bought a 1920's fixed blade Union Cut Co / it too was used and Mint so they are out there and boy did you score a move knife.
The Bpne handle Slans are just gorgeous.
And not to leave out the two nice Barlows either - that Ulster is in superb order- I personally would be so pleased coming home with just that knife Augie.
The American Barlow / you say it's in rough condition - but apart from the wear to the tip from sharpening that makes it sit up from the liner - I can only see a great old Barlow.

Very, very well done Augie.

Charlie - great help with interesting information. And what beauties you have shown for examples of the stampings. WOW!!

Hi Frank, Windows 8 ( which I loathe to be honest ) and I am using Google Chrome.
- in saying that - this morning was a first as I went in to edit and it said the web site had"timed out"
But it was strange that I could add another post without this happening. I think I as well as other at times when trying to get into the BF cant - it comes up with the usual "Database error" etc,
Frank I just added the groan as I was embarrassed at how my txt typing on the I phone came out when I checked the post :o It doesnt help having saw-cut finger tips on tiny wee buttons on the phone.
MMMM...strange, could edit this post, but just tried to get into my above post with all the wrong predictive spelling ( mistakes ) on there -and it still does the same thing - so that post must have some background behind it from my Phone and wont let me edit it? ( as you can see I am right up there with computers :( )

Knife content added ....

Duncan, thanks for the comments, it was a good day, I really enjoyed the hunt, beautiful mint knife you posted:thumb up:

Charlie, thank you for the information, I found some of the same and also found the possibility of 2 companies in Connecticut using the American name.

One more arrived today, a nice Rodgers stag penknife, I'm thinking 1900 to 1930's. Decent shape with some pitting.

thanks nifebrite. It is the same company. According to Sellens the Simmons Hornet brand knives were made in Germany from 1883 to 1917, do not know by whom. During this time period the other Simmons brands (Keen Kutter being the most prominent) were made by Walden.

Blimey, is it 2 years Ted? Where does time go?! Nice to see your collection of ring-openers, particularly your beautiful Schrade  Everytime I pick up a ring-opener, I end up giving it away since I think they are an unusual and interesting pattern, which some folk have not previously seen. I think I only have one! :D Two, including this Granton Fruit Knife
