"Old Knives"

I'm quite excited this morning.

I bought recently a Taylor Eye Witness Bowie Knife I believe that Bowie could actually be the correct term for this one and not hunting knife- Bernard used to crack me over the knuckles for using the Bowie knife term too loosely, but I remember Bernard looking at a Joseph Rodgers knife and called it a Bowie because it had the different Sheath that had the Frog Mounting- I could be mistaken - it was because the Sheath mounting placed it in a certain era/ period.

Just received it - but can't post any pics until I get home - this knife does NOT look to have been used- if so very little.

Has the Stamping on the Ricasso TAYLOR SHEFFIELD. On the blade it has the very famous Eye with the stamping- ( actually - deep engraving ) EYE WITNESS KNIFE.

It also has its Original correct period Sheath with frog/ belt mount.

I posted a wee while ago that I very rarely come across any Taylor Eye Witness knives these days- I saw this and lept at it. I'm extremely pleased with this purchase.

Brings back memories of my mate Jack Black and I standing outside the Eye Witness Factory in Sheffield. 👍

Looking forward to seeing your Bowie Duncan, it sounds like a gem. Very happy memories my friend :)

Thank You Harry, Mike and Jack

Now its always a bit scary buying older "Bowie" or "Bowie/Hunting Knives" because of Fakes etc, Im pretty sure this knife looks good, whats your opinion good or Bad Jack Sir?

Sellers picks sorry....

Looks good to me Duncan (like I'd know! :D), an interesting old knife? May I ask how big it is?

Hi Jack
Thanks for coming in the total length is 10 & 1/2 inches long, the Blade being 6 & 1/4 inches of that.

The Handle is Checkered Gutta Percha - or Ebony, I have researched it a bit, the Stampings are exact to other older Eye Witness Bowie type knives, the last owner was cleaning it for sale and I told him to stop immediately - seems I got in there in the nick of time, slight "shiny pitting" above the Real Knife Witness in the middle of the blade- minimal damage by the buffer - Whew!

Phew! Well saved Duncan, and congratulations my friend. Yes the stamp definitely looks genuine doesn't it?

Great knife. How old is older?

Thank you Jack and Augie, Scrteened Porch - Im thinking this knife would be turn of the century - around the 1900's.

That's a beauty Duncan. Well saved.

I thought this one was pre 1880 based on the handle shape and the tapered, hand-forged tang.
