It was a treat to handle those at the picnic Charlie. I liked when you described them being used. "Lay on top of a hose or rope and smack with a mallet" the true ORIGINAL "hard use" knives:cool::thumbsup:

It's amazing that these have lasted over 100 years, Paul!
I guess they avoided too many mallets!:)

TIMBER!!!!!!
Something slightly different, AMAZING quality in this Imperial Prov. Knife- the Walk and Talk is as smooth as Silk- with Beautiful Lock-up with a definitive Snap!
STAG- TO- DIE- FOR!!!! I love Stag- it doesnt get better than this - unless it gets another 50 to 80 years older than the Colour will only get better!

That is just an extremely cool combo folder!!!
I couldn't find an ad for an Imperial folding knife hatchet like yours prior to 1939, and yours most certainly dates to at least as far back as the early 1930s.
The following ad shown from 1939 shows this model with "Compo Pearl Handles" (most likely pearl celluloid).
Imperial started using celluloid for handle material around 1936 and had pretty much fazed out all natural handle materials like stag and bone after WWII.

Charlie thats a splendid Grafting Knife by New York Co- amazing!- The Jig Work is simply outstanding! You have some beautiful examples of that type of Knife!

Lee - Thank you for the comments on the Imperial- something different my friend!

Lyle- Im picking you would know that was in your pocket eh?

Mike- Cheers kind Sir- yeah- thats a whole lotta Stag there - I am truly impressed on how nicely this Knife is built- it isnt pretty by any means....But Im thinking this Knife is kinda cool!

Herder- Thank you my friend, I was thinking of around that era, I too have the Imperial Cattle Knife- same Bone- same everything! I think I have two or three- one a Salesman Sample, They too are stunning Knives and extremely well made!
Neal your example is a gorgeous Knife my friend!

I saw during the Queen Knife Show an example of the Knife shown in the Catalog you have so kindly supplied - it looked nothing special at all- and one was on the big site before I left for America as well- both the imitation Pearl and both fairly scrappy looking Knives to be honest- although I want a partner for this stag example - I am thinking that when I find an example - it will have to be a very tidy example.

During the GEC and Queen Knife shows - I had the pleasure of attending with my friends- continually bumping into Dave - looking and listening to the deals going down- raising my head at different times and seeing John or Paul, Dave etc head down or in depth conversation- man that was great.
I took home some nice examples of Scouts- and to add Paul had some nice examples he had picked up and gifted me these as well- as it was a hefty package of Scouts that came home with me.
Robeson - amazing Bone, Shield- I cant believe how nice these Knives are..

Mr Paul Hilborn Gifted me this Miller Bros! Paul almost seemed embarrased by the wear on the Main Blade- the knife has been used! Paul this knife is a gorgeous Knife and Im thinking it would be a VERY lucky day if I was to ever lay my hands on such a knife in any tidier condition - what a sweetheart of a Knife....Thank you my friend....

One look at the Bone and we all say yep- N.Y Hammer Brand - I showed Bill this Knife at the GEC Rendezvous because of the simply outstanding Punch- hoping that a seed may be planted - Bill was mesmerized by the Build quality and the work that would go into such a Knife and Punch! This Knife is an outstanding Knife!

Wow Duncan! You did well. Nothing like coming home from a knife show with a bunch of quality knives. And to get to spend all of that time with friends to boot. I was going to point out which ones I liked the best but I really like them all. Congrats. They have found a great home.

You guys are killing me! I have got myself checking ebay twice a day now in hopes of a well kept vintage knife at a price I can afford!

edit: When you see "mother of pearl" handles on early 1900s knives, what material is that typically? Is it actual nacre, or is it some celluloid composite?

Here's another rescue attempt, originally had a gorgeous set of MOP scales with a straight bar shield but they were shattered so I took them off and tried a quick set of ivory laminate from a set of piano keys. This was a rough cut and test fit, apparently I cut them a little short. At least there's hope for this old Schrade Walden. Notice the split back backspring? It also has a nail file manicure blade that was broken so I rounded it it off. This has been a work in progress for a few years. I put the makeshift test scales on and I've been usin' it ever since :). I'm gonna make a permanent set this winter and try to inlay the NS Bar shield.

For your enjoyment, another one saved from the scrap pile.

Nice job Ted bringing that knife back to action  ...

The actual knives!!
Thanks to David Clark, for the ad and the cutlery!!
There is a Barlow in the last pic to show thickness and length.View attachment 757208 View attachment 757209 View attachment 757210

Charlie – what a fantastic trio of knives and the ad is great to go along with them … I’ve seen photos of those Wolf and Crouch knives but never held one in hand .. sounds like they are a solid handful :) ... nothing like an old big hefty knife :D. ...

Seeing Duncan's wonderful Knife Hatchet combo reminds me that while Imperial is mostly known for their inexpensive shell wrapped celluloid handled knives, they did make some really great models prior to WWII.
Enclosed is an Imperial Cattle knife from the 1930s with nice blades and beautiful bone handles.

Neal – Great old cattle knife which along with Duncan’s clearly shows that Imperial made some really nice knives in the earlier days !! ..

Duncan – Awesome showing of knives from your visit (and I am just quoting the first post of the now 4 posts but I mean from all of your posts) – each and every one really special for many reasons and great looking scout knives from great old makers ;-) I'm really glad you had such a great visit!!

Cheers!
Lee

Very nice examples of Imperial's work, Duncan and Neal!
Great Ulster Doc, Stuart - a class act!
That Bronze-shielded Robeson is sweet, Duncan. Maybe Charlie Noyes will give us some skinny on it!!

Thank you Lee
Great Ulster Stuart - what a nice Knife!

Charlie thank you! Always good when Mr. Noyes comes with his amazing Robeson Knowledge. :)
