These aren't quite as old as many shown over the past couple of days, though I confess to being uncertain of their true dates of manufacture. I'm as close as Goins can get me. They are two knives of same size (3 1/4" closed), same blade types (spear and pen), and similar vintages. A Cattaraugus Cutlery (Little Valley, NY) equal end sleeveboard from 1886-1963 (?) and a Valley Forge Cutlery (Newark, NJ) jack with a creamy white celluloid that look like smooth plain bone. Valley Forge was in business 1916-1950 and owned by Boker USA (J.R. Boker was its president as of 1920).

Great knives guys. Here is an old Pennsylvania KnifeView attachment 815697
IMG_2487.JPG Don't these look like cousins? When I first saw yours I thought, oh yeah!!! Was Pennsylvania knife company a manufacturer? I have been trying to find the manufacturer of this knife for sometime and have come up empty. Thought it was perhaps Ulster but the rear pin placement doesn't resemble anything I have seen up until now. Except mine has one more pin than yours. Is there any info you could possibly share on the Pennsylvania Cutlery? That is a beautiful knife that you have sir!!!!!

LB- Goins says Pennsylvania Knife Co was manufactured by either Tidioute Cut Co or Hollingsworth Knife Co. for a Philadelphia hardware store called Supplee Hardware Company. :) The tang stamp dates from 1910 - 1920... that's antique status +/- 3 years

Thanks again VP. I have got to start gathering some literature on these older knives and taking the time to doing more research. I know just enough to be dangerous. I appreciate your help on that question.

The Goins Encyclopedia has made me a lot less dangerous and reading many of Bernard Levine's comments about collecting and identifying on this site have been extremely helpful. I thought I saw a Goins Encyclopedia on that famous auction site the other day for like $40... that's a decent price.

Stuart I like your VF! Nice blade etch:thumbsup: I think VF was in business prior to 1916. In fact I think they were in business prior to even 1900. Boker, as I recall, bought a controlling interest in VF in or around 1902 partly to combat the increasing US Tariffs. Boker started marking the blades of their knives with a VF in a circle after 1916 or thereabouts. I was curious so I looked at a couple of my early VF folders (pre VF in a circle) and they have a 3 line straight tang address. The Boker made VF knives have a curved tang stamp with a VF in the circle. Hopes this helps some.

Lloyd, you are correct and more precise. According to Goins,Valley Forge was established in 1892 and owned by Boker USA by 1902. My reference to the 1916 date was based on the "VF in a circle" that is on my knife's tangs, along with a curved "Valley Forge". As you noted, that mark started in 1916 and was used until 1950. My knife is no earlier than 1916, but the firm was much older and I omitted that. I do appreciate the confirmation information, as I do any information offered.

I did not add that the blades pull and snap like bear trap. It is a fine, handsome medium sized knife that I like to carry and pull out when my buddies and I share drinks in the afternoon. They don't see many knives 67-101 years old, or even 5 years old, that function so well. It gives me a grin.

Thanks guys, Lostball what is the mark on that ebony jack? I can't make it out.

It says Goodman Cutlery Co. I posted it sometime back looking for some info on it. Our forum member "Supratentorial" provided some great info. Unfortunately there wasn't much. They began looking for cutlery providers in 1894 then it gets alittle hazy.
