"Old Knives"

This knife was posted recently, and I bought it from the poster!! Thanks Mike!!
Made by Napanoch before WWI, it has been respectfully maintained!!
Very well made, it has good lock-up, and beautiful bone handles with hammered rivets.
I suspect Napanoch was known for their beautiful blade grinds, first, from what I have seen, and second, they were commissioned to make knives for several companies.
This knife is marked Pacific Hardware and Steel. Their main location was in San Francisco.

What is the smooth metal-handled knife on the lower right, Ted?

When I was a little kid the Old Man used to work at Shell Oil as the fleet mechanic and one of the vendors for cleaning supplies and degreasers was Zep. The Zep vendor always gave the Old Man a couple of Imperial Schrade Magic knives and he always gave me one. I began to look forward to the beginning of the month when the vendors saw the Old Man. I even got a Mora from a light bulb vendor who gave him one as a gift :) . I don't know if you noticed, but there's no nail nick to open the knife....so the trick is how do you open it?.....What you do is hold it a certain way {vertical} and press in on the blade and it will pop open enough to grab the blade and open it with a pinch..hold it the opposite way and press in to close it and lock.

Here's some pics of a similar Henckels, (not mine) showin' the hidden latch, the one on the Imperial is identical.

I used to have a bunch of different advertisers that were magic knives, seems Imperial sold a lot of them as premiums the sales reps gave away. I eventually gave them all away except the stainless one, only non advertiser magic knife I've ever had so it was the only one I kept. It's a very cool pattern with a lot of variations to collect. The one I always look for is the 2 knife "Magic Knife set that had 2 magic knives with each having 2 different color scales for doing another magic trick.

Charlie, that Napanoch Lockback Hunter is gorgeous. The swedges are spectacular, it just needs a little bit of a pocket worn sheen to it ;) I love the older big knives, they're built so much beefier. :)

That is certainly a beautiful knife Charlie . I really like the Sabre grind and that jigging . I am sure that there are many reasons for not being able to get new knives with jigging like it but it would be nice .

Harry

Thanks for the "magic" explanation and the nice comments on the Napanoch, Ted!
It is a little beefy at 4 5/8" long.

Much appreciated, Lyle and Harry!!

Nice Pearl Fruity, Ted!!

BTW, I did not polish those surfaces on that Naponoch. My fading scanner has stronger light from the lower left. Interesting effect!!
Sigh . . . . . . . . . . . .

Thanks, herder!!

Nice use of Stag on your coke-bottle! Can you show the other side?

Beautiful Knife Charlie. Stunning in fact. The Bone - the Jigging Pattern, not an overly long pull but long pull just the same. The Grind on that blade- whew!

Nice German there Herder Sir - good show guys!

IMG_3145.PNG IMG_3146.PNG Have not had time with my new schedule to do much more than a quick visit here and there. As always a host of beautiful knives presented this week. I don't think I have posted this knife here but I could be wrong. Going to have to work on my collection if I am going to continue to contribute here. :) I'm real fond of this Crucible Knife Co.
