"Old Knives"

Here's my wild guess:
The outside of the springs are dark because they are carbon steel and come in contact with hand sweat. The inside is still shiny because it gets a film of oil from when you oil the pivots, and that oil doesn't get rubbed off as quickly as on the outside.
That's kind of what I was thinking too r8shell... that particular knife though does not appear to be used much at all and came in original box with the papers rarely unfolded. I wonder if they would have added some type of protective finish out of the factory? I don't want to try to scratch it off LoL...o_O

Thanks Duncan. Yes it's ivory or "african goat horn" as some are now calling it. ;)
Nice Sears set! I've tried to win auctions for Ulery/Napanoch tool kits but to no avail so far.

Kevin, the tortoise shell toothpicks are nice to have since a lot of them broke or went missing over the years. Here's one similar to the knife you posted. Love that Kastor!

So at the risk of sounding confused ... are the tortoise shell toothpicks replacements then? Just curious because the tweezers on my Henckel's lobster are broken too and I would like to try to replace them but not if the tortoise shell toothpick is original. I saw a beat up Henckel's MOP while trolling the Bay one night and almost bought it for the tweezers.

No, the tortoise shell toothpicks are the real deal. Some knives have both tweezers and the toothpick. I think I have one with an ear spoon as well.

This seems to be as good an answer as any. I just took a look at an Old Timer that I've had since I was a boy. The back springs are almost black on the exterior. Looking into the blade well the springs are still shiny, although there are some spots of corrosion.

Cool thanks Mike  Now I wish I would've grabbed that parts knife with the tweezers and my MOP lobster would be put back together again

Very nice Herder! What a great set- especially with sears name attached- because you just know that someone good made it under contract for them!

Thanks Campbellclanman and yes, the Germans made some great knives.
Great pearl multiblade Mike R., who is the maker?
A couple of nice Camillus models from SteveC and black mamba.
Neat old Kastor fishtail folder, V.P. which is another pattern I'm fond of. Enclosed is a pre-war Boker model.
