"Old Knives"

Most collectors are aware of the "Western States Cutlery Company" from Boulder Colorado, but less known is the earlier formed "Western Cutlery Company" which was a brand of "Wiebusch & Hilger" out of New York. "Wiebusch & Hilger" was a hardware retailer who registered the "Western Cutlery" name in 1887 (over twenty years before the "Western States Cutlery Company" was established)
The "Western Cutlery Company" from New York used a Bison head as their logo and their knives were made in Germany. They existed from 1887 to circa 1914. Wiebusch & Hilger was out of business in 1928.
Enclosed is a two blade stag handled model on an original box.

Very nice Herder :)

New York... the first "Wild West" LoL :D

It's nice to find a knife and a box from the same company! Even better when they are in such good condition!! Very nice Mr. Herder!!

Thanks, Campbellclanman, Lostball, r8shell, V.P., waynorth, Gevonovich, and Mike R.
And I agree with Mike R. that the "Old Knives" thread should not be missed!!!

Here is another 100 year old "Western Cutlery" folder in the form of a Congress model.
This knife was most certainly made by Boker and has pressed hard rubber handles as Boker also offered, but in a different pattern.
Below the Western knife is a catalog illustration for a similar Boker model from 1910. Boker offered this same model as early as 1905.

Very nice folders Herder but that pressed stag opposite end with box is just outstanding and a real prize in your collection I am sure!! Thanks to all who post photos and some information to go with it in this thread—a fabulous resource:thumbsup:

Here are a few more I acquired at the OKCA show in April. I have had some serious health problems lately making it hard to be as active on BF as I would like at times. Thanks to the person who sold me these! You know who you are and I appreciate it!

Herder- That Congress looks like a Tank! I bet that is one VERY well made Knife! Nice Swedge Work- I'm taking these to be necessary as well with a Knife like that- But I just love Swedge work- and long Pulls with Bolsters that just scream for attention!

Once again Luger my friend- beautiful Knives.
I too absolutely love that Dwight Divine Whittler- Stunning Bone - the whole package is quite spectacular.

Man that NYK is awesome! Just look at the Bolster work and bottom Cap - not to mention it still has that lovely far reach of the Tip on that beautiful Clip Point Blade.
Lloyd I can see slight colour action in the Handles of this knife - is this Jigged Bone or Composite? from what I can see on my phone Im thinking this Spectacular Knife has a darker Jigged Bone - and of course NYK’s Beautifully famous jigg work. Am I seeing right there Lloyd Sir?

It simply goes without saying that both the Serpentine Jacks are great - who do you know could turn their back on a early Peach Seed from Schrade? No one that I know!!

I've always liked those Boker stepped bolsters.

Man, I would be quite happy getting any one of the knives that Lloyd posted, let alone all of them at once. That crisp, deep brown jigging on the NYK Co. knife means it has led a very sheltered life! I hope you feel better Lloyd. Thanks for posting

Four beautiful knives, Lloyd, each in their own way! I am especially partial to the HSB and the NYK. Love the bone and clip blade on the HSB. The NYK Hammer Brand is very elegant, with the fancy bolster, the NYK stamped cap, and the clip blade blade is shaped somewhat like a miniature bowie blade.

Lovely foursome, Lloyd, but that serpentine NYK is just spectacular! One of the most unique traditionals I've ever seen.

I hope and pray that your health issues get resolved quickly and completely!

I'm hoping you get better soon, Lloyd!!
And I am glad you are enjoying those knives!!!;)
