On a Mora Kick

I'm slowly converting away from an EDC folding knife to a Mora Robust. I've used my SOG Trident heavily for the past 7 years but I can't resist these low priced Swedish knives! Anyone have some custom sheath pics? I've seen a few really cool hand made leather sheaths on youtube.

I bought a Grizzly sheath (with firesteel) for my 546G. Nice sheath, perfect fit. Mike at Grizzly makes a pretty solid sheath, about $30 IIRC. 3X the cost of the knife, but easier to replace the knife. I need to get another 546 or a 511, and I'm good.

It comes that way, and you can remove it with the Chicago screws. I don't really use it, since the 546 is stainless and won't spark. A 511 is carbon and will throw sparks. I might just take a piece of old hacksaw blade and attach it, and I'll be good. I use the knife to field dress deer when hunting. Went through 3 deer last year without sharpening, and most of the blade was still pretty sharp (shaving in some spots). I touched it up with a flat diamond stone on the patio railing, maybe 3 swipes per side, and the hair flies off my arm (knife came that sharp). My first bevel knife, and won't be my last.
 
Some folks like to add some paracord to their Moras, like a loop for knife retention in sheath, and sometimes wrapped/knotted around the sheath for spare cord carry. I tied a Turk's head knot around mine, integrating a firesteel with the knot. I've yet to drill a hole in the knife handle for adding a wrist lanyard, but I'll get around to it eventually... :)

Wow! That's nice knot tying! I did a normal generic type wrap on mine and it's completely slipped off twice. I'll have to youtube your knot again to see if I can figure it out. I have a firesteel coming in the mail too. We'll see how it goes. Don't think I'll trust myself with any handle drillin'!

Stainless sparks a ferro rod no problem. All that matters is a sharp striking edge and a good firm stroke. Perhaps your spine is not square enough. Mora/Light My Fire's Swedish Fire Knife has a stainless blade. The key is the spine is nice and square.

Since the sheaths are smooth plastic, you can put some grip tape or a ranger band around the sheath first, which will provide a grippy surface to keep your cord in place after tightening. I tied a long 4 bight TH knot, doubled using about 11 feet of paracord for the one shown. That knot can be made longer by making additional turns with the two bight turk's head that is tied first, so you can cover the length of the sheath if desired.

I'd recommend finding a scaveneged pen body or some other tubular sheath for the firesteel, and tie over that, since tying directly over the firesteel while snug and secure in place, does takes some wriggling to get it reinserted back under the paracord after use, so with a tight fitting sleeve it would still be secure and easier in & out. ;)

Since most Moras aren't full tang, x-ray example, it's safe to drill a hole near the end of the grip. You can hold a magnet up to the handle to find where the tang ends to be sure. I think the tang on the Robust stops under 3/4 of the way from the blade...

The spine isn't square, I just looked. It looks like Mora polished the knife spine to "break" the corners. Thanks for the info. I'll have to dremel a section of the spine so it will work.

This is technically of a Companion, but the blade/tang profiles are the same. The stock on the Robust is just thicker and the handle a bit beefier. A fellow on another forum rehandled his Robust and confirmed it.

No problem! A lot of folks confuse ferro rods and flint-and-steel. You don't even need a steel striker with ferro rods. A sharp rock or piece of glass will do the trick in a pinch. :):thumbup:

Ahh! Great idea! Thanks! And thanks for the knot link. I will definitely try the grip tape. Maybe I'll calm myself down and drill into the robust handle, after all it was less than $15!!!
 
Yes I am on a real crazy Mora kick right now. I ordered the Robust and the same day I got it and started cutting up some wood with it I got online and ordered another. I made a cool sheath for it and I am ready to get out and use it. I want the Light My Fire Mora now.

The LMF Fire Knife is pretty excellent. I, like many, was initially concerned about how the pommel attachment was in terms of strength but after seeing them in person my fears were put to bed. It's SUPER solid. I don't see it ever coming detached by accident.
 
Hello, i live in Sweden, saw this thread and got curious, what do a Mora Knife cost in the states on averge? :P its around 3$ here with the exchange price thats now from SEK to $,
