On a Mora Kick

I like the thin blades personally, but definitely understand why so many folks like the Robust! It's a great knife!

Yes the thin models are also well worth to use.
I have yet to break a Mora in use and I have put them to very hard tests in cutting fully hardened fiberglass reinforced polyester for boats.

The Robust has a secondary bevel from factory, wich means the edge doesn't roll on hardwood, as the zeroedged models.

By stropping on leather I expect the edge to cut as smooth as my more wellhoned knives.

I believe that's the 511. Most places, $8 US.

Shipping is around $6.

Same price in western Canada. We find them in hardware and farm supply stores. 511's are more or less seen as another farm tool out here. $7-8.00

Is the Robust available in Stainless?

Not at this time. I don't expect we'll see them any time soon (though we may at some point in the future) because of the greater difficulty of stamping stainless. It wears on tooling much harder and they're already using the same tooling for blanking the Robust and Companion models.

The Robust has made the first day at work and it feels like it's gonna be a lot more days with this knife!

My latest mora addition is a custom 510. The 102 mm long blade is made of some kind of tool steel. My guess is either UHB 15LM or 2140/Arne.

Cool find!
I use several 511's cut down to 510's.
The first one was from 1979, but it was forgotten in the garden and totally rusted away.

The two I use now are both oldie's from the 1980'ies.
Properly cared for, they just refuse to give up!

I have heard a lot of good things about the Mora's, looking at picking one up on the next purchase.

I believe not. I'd also like to choose a stainless 12C27 Robust.

~Paul~

Its been a few weeks since this post, but Paul's wish for a thicker 12c27 Mora has made me think of my thicker 12c27 knives.
Those are not made by Mora, but Bark River made several models around 2005-2006 in this steel.
I bought a couple of those and found both the geometry and heat-treat to be at an even higher level than Mora.

Those models sold out several years ago, but I come to think of a South Dakota hunting store that are known to still have a stock of some older BR models.
A telephone call across the Atlantic revealed that they had a full dozen (!) of the Sperati Point and in 12c27!

I ordered one in black & brown Maple burl and it arrived safe and sound a week ago.
To my surprise it was a very nice burl and it's unbelievable that it has remained on the shelf for six whole years!

I doubt Mora will make a thicker 12c27 model, but hopefully I'm wrong.
However I was more than pleased with the Sperati Point and I look forward to use it in the nearby future.

I think that the difficulty of blanking thick stainless will prevent us from seeing "Robust-ified" stainless models. Heavier equipment is required and the tooling wears faster.

Some help please on Mora selection...

I have never owned a Mora, but I know that some are stronger than others in tang construction...

So, from a strength standpoint, what should I choose for my first Mora?

Thank you

Mora Robust and Mora Bushcraft Black are the strongest in carbon steels.
The Bushcraft Force is the choice if You need stainless, but it's 0,1" thick where the other two are 0,126".

I like the handle better on the Robust and this model is plenty strong.

I suspected this and went with a knife I could buy.
But I do think that the Bushcraft Force blade, is a good base for a custom and I certainly like mine.

The 711 has a very strong and long tang. Very nice handle...maybe the best of the bunch. Robust is great too.

I think the best place to start would be a Clipper/Companion. I have several and this one gets the most use.
