I am going to try something different. While I do not consider myself a expert, I have developed a method that works really well on Busse knives, with typical Busse grinds.

I will walk as many as 10 people through taking a Busse knife, thinning the edge and bring it to a polished convex edge that is very nearly as good as it gets for the big busse knives.

HAND TOOLS AND WORK ONLY. FREE HAND ONLY. No jigs or gadgets will be used. Cost will be kept as low as possible. It may cost you as much as 125 dollars to get set up with a couple of Diamond hones being the most costly. But you will be all set for years and frankly I have made my money back doing work for some forum members.

I will promise to be highly responsive to people that sign up and I will not leave you hanging. I want to limit this to BUSSE knives and 10 students.

The question and answers as well as pics will all be done publicly here. Once the thread starts I would like everyone to sit back and only the 10 students and I post questions in the thread.

Now once again, I am just going to show MY WAY of doing it, and I do not claim it is the best way. I just know that many of you seem to like the way my blades turn out. I have not personally seen a edge that stays sharp longer and holds better.

The class will be free and I will walk you through the materials list, even suggest on-line vendors. If nobody is interested I will understand.

My goal is not self promotion but to help what appears to me to be a growing Busse fan base that lacks basic sharpening skills and abilities to learn this easy and useful technique.

One last thing... Students in addition to a Busse knife should have a digital camera to post pictures and perhaps a cheap knife to practice on. But these last two items are not mandatory!

Count me in!!!! What about arkansas stones and ceramic hones????

Well the stones are just going to be used to rough the blade bevel into shape. So they need to be really course and aggressive or you will die of old age. I will post a materials list and people will be free to deviate from it. However doing so may compromise the results. The task lists and activities will be built around the suggested materials. If you want to thin the tip on a Busse FFBM with a 600 grit Ceramic stone.... LOL more power to ya.

Sign me up too Please! But I will gladly bow out if someone needs this more than I do.

Materials List.

GREAT ONLINE VENDOR FOR SHARPENING STUFF. Totally honest with GREAT customer service. I have made them aware of this Class. I DO NOT WORK FOR THEM. I am just a happy customer.

Here is an interesting Diamond stone, 10 inches long and 4 inches wide. This makes for huge sharpening strokes for big knives. Its double sided and can be purchased x-course/course and would work really well for this project. There is also another combo Diamond stone in finer grits Make SURE you buy the optional holder.

Same thing except in 8 inch

Next we have the Dia-sharps These are continuous surface models and they are easy to do tips on.

Stone holder

Now I recommend for our project at LEAST 2 grits of Stone. X-course and course.
As a Option a Fine stone ( 600 grit or so is nice to have) You do not have to buy these Diamond stones. Any large aggressive stones will work to one degree or another.

But Cry once and buy them. They will last a very long time and this is a GREAT HOBBY.

After that we are moving to sandpaper.

Which brings us to Sandpaper. We need automotive type wet/dry paper in the following grits:

2 sheets of 600
1 sheet of 1200 to 1500
1 sheet of 2000 or higher.

Some flat hard leather backing for the sandpaper. It will need to elevate the sand paper from your work surface. I use a Corin magnetic benchblock from Hand American.com

But you could use a block of wood with some thumbtacks or what ever. The idea being to make a elevated work surface just like the Diamond stones in the holders. Lets everybody post some pictures of your solution for the sandpaper backing. This is a interactive class.

More pics to follow.

I don't want to give you a slot because you are already better at this than me. Instead please follow along and add to the conversation. This is not a advanced study in the art of sharpening like somebody like you would need.

Instead its for the sharpening challenged that want to go further in the hobby and get the most from their expensive Busse knives. But PLEASE add comments and suggest alternative methods!!! :D

Ok I am all set. Let's start! I pretty much have everything already from accumulating various sharpening tools over the years.

Jim,

You are being too modest here. Give yourself more credit! I think that you are doing a great service and I will do anything I can to participate and help out. I promise I will try not to screw things up for you ;)

If more people would learn and enjoy sharpening we would not have issues about sending back knives because the tip isn't sharp etc.....

If there is still room I'd do it as well.

It can never hurt to learn... well if I'm not too old to learn.

P.S. Colbalt you got a SHBM I can use for this?

OK here are some Pictures

1. Shows the Magnetic Corin Block I use for sandpaper from Hand American
2. Shows the magnetic backed leather Also from Hand American
3. Shows me wrapping it with 2000 grit paper
4. Shows it ready to go
5. Shows a 8 inch DMT 2x course 120 micron Bench stone in the optional holder

No, but I can loan you a DogFather to practice on if you wish.

I might get in on this after seeing how good a job Jim did on his hellrazor as I am pretty sure I could not have gotten that level of performance. Always good practice to see how someone else does it.

Thanks but I'll just get to Sonoma this week and get the user CGFBM. I'd use a Basic 7 I have that is not sharp but I wouldn't want to change that edge to full convex.

My sharpening skills leave MUCH to be desired, so please put me in for spot 10. :) ...And thanks for the offer!
