On-line class Edge re-profile/convex your Busse.

OK,

I'm thinking maybe a ZTBM... put on a thin convex edge...but open to other ideas. I'd rather have max cutting power and touch up as needed in the field, as I do more brush clearing then heavy chopping.

I can't wait....

I'm going to live/learn vicariously throught this thread.

btw, I bought my DMT D8XX from a great seller on eBay called 'toolsforu13' or their store "TOOLS FOR U"

A lot of folks from the Maintenance forum have got their DMT stuff there.

Cool choice. The convex is already formed on that one. Zero Edge and all.

You can probaly skip the stones and go with some course paper to start that one.. or not...

+1 on that seller. That is where I got my D8XX also.

BTW, the Universal holder that Jim recommends is much better than the standard base holders from the stone/diamond hone manufacturers. The Universal holder is highly adjustable and can be used for most any standard sized waterstones, hones, and even leather strops. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Any other references for the magnetic corian thingum? The Handamerican shop does not seem to be available online at the moment.

The site is not working but I think they are selling by phone. But no I have no other source.

Consider thumbtacks and a piece of wood with a leather strip...

I don't have a video camera... I think my camera may be able to taker 15 second video clips... I will check.

I will be using a very blunt Ratmandu . That ive had a very unsuccessful time trying to sharpen before

Excellent... Are you going to strip it? What is your goal for the knife?

Do you want to keep about the same edge angle or are you going to thin it out?

I just ordered the following from the Tools-For-U store, http://stores.ebay.com/TOOLS-FOR-U.

I picked up the 10x4 DMT DuoSharp stones and base, all three delivered for $181.96:
- W250EFNB - This bench stone has a EXTRA-FINE grit on one side, and a FINE grit on the other side.
- W250CXNB - This bench stone has a COARSE grit on one side, and an EXTRA-COARSE grit on the other side.
- The B8250 DUOBASE

I the pricing was so good I picked up the second two-grit DMT stone. Even if I don't need it for this class I felt that having all four grits (X-Course, Course, Fine, X-Fine) in two large stones would pay off at some point. :p

Good buy thats 4 10 x 4 inch surfaces for less than 45 dollars each. That is a life time supply of stone brother! If you are tempted to use them before we kick things off.. MAKE SURE YOU WET THEM FIRST WITH WATER!!

I like the sound of that.

Now I just need to figure out which knife I'm going to pick. Is it easier to learn on a smaller, medium, or larger knife?

My goal for the knife is to learn from it .For some reason im not to keen on it ,so i might as well have some fun Sharpening it and trying new stuff on it
.Prefer my M6 or my Ratweiler.
i am saving for a ASH-1 and a new Ratweiler so would like to know how to Sharpen them well beforehand.

Very small knives and very large knives both provide some extra challenges.
I suggest a medium sized blade to start like the Batac. But any blade will do if your game to try it.

Alrighty, medium blade and my first project would be either my BATAC, my Mischief 6, or my Scrapper 6... let's go with Scrapper 6.

As for goals, I would like to:
- learn how to do this and do it well.
- be able to sharpen at a consistent angle that presents a good compromise between edge holding/durability and sharpness.
- be able easily push slice paper and shave hair on my arm.
- have one system/process that would work for all of my knives.

Hi Jim - I will be gathering the suggested material this week. I have a BattleRat that I have used to chop a bunch of limbs and cut/dig through some roots that definitely could use some sharpening. I'll follow along and post when I get the materials.

Thanks,
Dwaine

Pretty well thought out. So you know this system does not do Serrated or recurve blades. So as long as all you knives are plain edges you are go to go.

Ahh, just read your post about the medium sized blade as being the best to start on.

I guess I'll probably go with either an LMS or a Scrapper 6, probably the scrapper.

Thanks again.

In no time flat those serrated blades will become plain edges! ;)
