On-line class Edge re-profile/convex your Busse.

Jaxx your number 10 and the class is filled. From here on in lets keep on topic and make room for the class participants.

How much time is everyone going to need to gather materials?

I'm late, I see. Which is fine -- I'm just too busy right now.

But...sign me up for Class #2! ;)

From your recommended list I'm trying to pick between the "interrupted diamond surface" (IDS) or the "continuous diamond surface" (CDS).

The IDS:
- This stone has the option of a bigger surface area at 10x4
- It has holes in it! From the description, "The surface sharpens very quickly because the metal filings are quickly removed from the sharpening surface". Is this really an advantage?

The CDS:
- It's smaller at 8x3
- It is nice and smooth and I can see how that would be much nicer for points and fine work. Does the accumulation of shavings/grit from the blades create a problem?

If you had to pick one or the other, which would you pick?

I have both and for me they seem to be about the same. The advantage to the CDS is that it does not let tips get into the holes and you do not have to be careful of that.

The advantage to the IDS is that it has two grits one on each side and is there for cheaper but not by much.

If most of my knives were under 6-7 inches I would get the smaller stone. If larger I would buy the 10 inch.

Maybe a week...? Do you have suggestions on where to order what is needed? ...Or will any Home Depot/Lowes have these items in stock? If the 2nd is the case, 2-3days max.

EDITED to add: Ok, I see your recommended sites for ordering... scratch my question about that. :)

Question re: the optional base for the 10 DMT stone.

Do you know if this base is fairly universal for all stones? For example would it fit these “ Dia-Sharp® line of DMT®”

Here is the description:
If you own or are purchasing DMT® stones we highly recommend the Bench Stone Holder. It fits 8" and 10" DuoSharp® stones and any 6" x 2" bench stone. This holder keeps your stones secured and solves the problem of having to chase your stones around the bench while sharpening. It also saves your knuckles from hitting the table by providing ample clearance while sharpening on lower profile stones like the DMT DuoSharp®. Another unique feature of this holder is the handle on the bottom so you can sharpen large knives and axes by moving the stone to the blade rather than bringing a large heavy blade to the stone. Made in the USA

OK we have the Class set, the Materials list has been published and I am working on Lesson one. Resetting the Edge bevel. This is the hard part and the foundation of what we are trying to do. After this is easy!

Feel free to ask any questions as I Create the first lesson. We will give everyone until next Friday to gather materials. In the mean time lets talk about what knives you have choosen and what you hope to accomplish.

This is actually important. You need to visualze the end result and be clear in your mind what it is you are after. This is a flexible process and produce many different kinds of edges.

TALK ABOUT IT:D

Justabuyer is going to do a Game Warden. I am after a thin edge that becomes SLIGHTLY more obtuse at the very edge for strength since it will be so thin. I want a HIGH degree of polish.

What are you after, and what knife will you be using?

The optional holder for the Duo-sharp is just for that stone. Not sure it would work with other stones.

This stone holder seems more universial and does work with the Dia-sharps

ok, point us to the links for the stuff you want us to get. I will order, and as Jaxx said, probably a week to week and a half to get the stuff.

I will probably do this on my Thru-hardenned BattleRAT

What are you after, and what knife will you be using?

Well I only have a few knives that are not very sharp right now. One is a FBMLE and another is a SHSH II and those are not good candidates for an experiment with an X-coarse diamond stone.

I’m not going to be able to get up to the other house and get the user FBM by next weekend so …
I have a Basic 7 that needs work and that would be my first choice if I could keep the asymmetric edge. Or I just may play with an unused Game Warden or AD. All my other users are too dear to experiment with.

As to edge, I can do well enough getting a knife sharp enough to shave arm hair but I have never been able to go beyond that; like say pushing the edge through paper. However, I like a lot of meat behind the edge of my knives because I often use them on extended camp/backpack/fishing trips and I don’t want a dull, rolled, or damaged edge towards the end of a trip.

So I want an edge that will split hair without being fragile.

Can I use the B7 and keep the asymmetric edge?

I believe that I will try using that FBM CG that I just sharpened after the "slightly mad experiment" situation, but I'm gonna have to beat on it a little, LOL, to dull the edge a little. I somehow put a "double bevel" on it, so it sounds like a good candidate for convexing. A week plus is what I'll probably need to get the items that you listed as well.

Wow. This is going to be very interesting, even for those of us late to the party.

Justabuyer -- you have some of the most interesting and intense personalities in the world of INFI enrolled in your class. I predict ... fun to come. :D;)

Read back a little in the thread... All the links are there! POST NUMBER 12 A battle rat is a good choice. You gonna strip it first? I would.

It is possible if not a little wierd to convex a Asymmetric edge. That would be interesting. I have done this very thing with a BM-e that was Asymmetric.
I left the tiny bevel side flat.

Cool we will start phase one on Friday but Phase one will take a while for everybody to get through. This is the important part!! If you take a few extra days to get your stuff thats fine. We will do one stage a week or so.

Yeap a interesting cast of charactors. I hope everyone is up for the last stage which is nude buffing. Those pictures are to be sent directly to Busse:D.

Man... late to the party again! :(

Are you going to keep this all in this thread???
It would be great to follow along, and maybe ask a queston or two.

A big   for you for putting the class on!
And if you do decide to hold a 2nd class... I'm in! ;)

.

Jerry said that Cobalt has already odered a satin INFI ring for one of Jaxx's toes.;)

Yeah right for his toe....

The reason I limited it to 10 was to keep it manageable and not bite off more than I thought I could support well.

If it goes well and folks like it...either I can do another one or somebody else with different style can do one. But hang around and follow the action.
