On Playing Wordle . . .

11/11/2022: Wordle 510 4/6

This was a bit of a brain twister.

14 possibilities after the 2nd guess and still 5 after
the 3rd but the answer was the only 1 to occur to me.

The current NYT average for this puzzle is 4.1.

It seemed harder than that to me and apparently was
for others here.

Easy to solve in 3 but still don't think I could have solved it in 2.

8 choices after the 2nd guess but only 2 after the 3rd.
Again, the answer was the only word that occured to me.

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 3.7.

Still a nice comeback after nothing but yellow. Woe is the day you fail to win a puzzle lol..

Looks like everyone struggled a bit with 510. I gambled again after adieu hit 3 letters.

Was reading something about how NYT just recently hired a dedicated word nerd to stifle us, keep your powder dry boys!

The 3rd guess revealed an 4th yellow letter that helped solve the puzzle. Actually, thought the word was based on 1 of 2 possible letter patterns but the 3rd guess revealed that it was neither. LOL! ;)

I posted info about the new Wordle "editor" in post #2099 above. She has already changed 4 out of 5 words (from the original list) over the past 5 days. Supposedly, her job isn't to make the game "harder" but "better."

Only the last word for Game #510 has caused us here any difficulty but, since the average score for #510 is currently 4.1, it really hasn't been that difficult for most players but, as I noted in my comment above, this word seemed more difficult than the average score would indicate.

According to something I read, EVERY puzzle should be able to be solved w/in 5 guesses, regardless of the method of analysis that you use to play the game -- be it the vowel method that I use or the letter frequency/consonant method that WordleBot uses.

You just need to stop and think about the word possibilities, based on the letters revealed and still outstanding, before each guess so as not to waste any guesses. Among other things, that's been part of my strategy to avoid using more than 5 guesses for any puzzle.

That's why Birdles & Pars are fine w/me. :)

Does that presume that one isn’t using hard mode, where you have to use revealed letters?

To solve every puzzle in 5?

Where I saw it first, it was just an off-hand remark, not backed by any data, asserting that any puzzle could be solved in 5 guesses or less, which I assume was based on playing in the "standard" mode.

There's actually an article describing an algorthim that the author uses: Solving Wordle in 3.48 guesses.

But, you don't need an mathematical model to achieve this. I play the game in "standard"mode and my current average over 259 games is 3.54, which is very close to the score achieved using the mathematical model described above.

The frequency distribution of my scores for the past 259 games is:

1: 0
2: 2
3: 124
4: 123
5: 10
6: 0
7: 0 (7=Fail)

So, it obviously is possible to solve all puzzles in 5 guesses or less in standard mode without using a mathematical model to do it.

There's also another article about how to win in "hard" mode in 5 guesses or less, also using a complicated mathematical algrothim to do it.
See: How to Win at Wordle Every Time.

WordleBot claims an average score of 3.5 in "standard" mode and 3.6 in "hard" mode but I've never seen any data to back that up.

If you have ability to read the NYT, this claim is made at the end of the following article: WordleBot 2.0.

5 choices per WordleBot, only 2 based on the letter
pattern that I chose. Didn't need to think of the other.

The current NYT average for this puzzle is 3.8.

14 choices after 2nd guess & 5 after the 3rd.
Poor 3rd guess but it added the letter L which
made the solution possible.

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 4.1.
