01/11/2023: Wordle 571 3/6

🟨🟨⬜🟨⬜

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Doubt that I could have solved this in 2, even if I had tried.

40 choices after 1 and still 4 choices in 2 using only
the correct letter pattern for the 3 letters revealed in 1.

The 2nd word reduced the choices from 4 to 1.

Current NYT average: 3.5
WordleBot's score: 3

01/10/2023: Wordle 570 4/6 GRIMY

3 choices after 2 and still 2 after 3: GRIMY & BRINY.

Chose GRIMY simply because G was closer than B
to my left index finger on the keyboard. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Final NYT average: 4.0
WordleBot's score: 3

I started with LEAST as usual and then IRONY, which is now my default second guess if no letters are revealed by LEAST. GRIMY was the only word I thought of, I didn't think of BRINY or PRICY at all.

I'm done, but I almost feel like I'd ruin people's guessing by posting now.

From yesterday:

LEAST
SEDAN

With the green E and yellow A, I was almost certain the pattern would have to be _E_A_, and after playing around with it, SEDAN was the only word I could think of or find that also included an S. Later I discovered AEGIS would have been a legitimate guess, though, and a search said there were two other choices as well that were not plural nouns or simple verb conjugations formed by adding an S to the end.

29 choices after 2 but only 1 after 3.

Current NYT average: 3.6

3 choices after 2. Didn't think of the other 2 words which
were: SHADE & SPADE. Probably would have chosen SEDAN
anyway if I did because it was different from the other 2.

Final NYT average: 3.6
WordleBot's score: 3

For you Wordle stat nerds (like me) out there, there is an interesting "trend" developing in the data for WordleBot's average score.

Since November, when the new Wordle Editor was appointed, WordleBot's average score has been 3.36. In comparison, my average score was 3.55 and the NYT average was 3.93.

However, in just the 1st 12 days of January, WordleBot's average score is only 3.08! In comparison, my average score for this time period has gone up to 3.67 and the NYT average has stayed about the same at 3.92.

Before the WordleBot Editor was appointed, WordleBot's "claimed" average score in standard mode was 3.6 and 3.7 in hard mode. I don't play strictly in hard mode, so I have no data for comparison. However, a drop from 3.6 to 3.36 is significant enough but a drop from 3.6 to 3.08 is pretty incredible.

FWIW, I really don't "trust" the way that WordleBot's daily solution and score is reported because when you look at the starting words that the "bot" uses, they vary constantly and almost ALWAYS seem to maximize the bot's potential for the lowest possible score, which is just too improbable to me.

So, until it is explained how the bot goes about choosing which words it uses to solve the puzzles, I wouldn't put too much stock in WordleBot's daily and average scores and pay more attention to the NYT average score which should be based on the "real" scores of "real" people who play the game.

Here's a chart to make the data easier to visualize:

Jan 1, 2023 - Jan 12, 20233.083.923.67

I'll report about this again at the end of the month to note if the declining trend in WordleBot's score is continuing or not.

Well, this probably means whoever runs Wordlebot should probably start keeping a loaded gun in the server room. You know. Just in case.

The attention you give to statistics is impressive ;)

I've been away from the forum for a bit but I'm back now, and I still have that sad smiley face loaded and ready...

I haven't scored a 5 since 10/08/2022 (96 games ago) but another one could pop up any time.

I continue to post a "sad" emoji whenever anyone scores a 5 or above because it is "sad" or "disappointing" and not someting to be "liked" IMO but the intent is indicate sympathy and not a negative judgment.

So, remain at the ready with that "sad" emoji! LOL! ;)

BTW, I started also posting the WOW! emoji for anyone who scores an Eagle or Hole-in-one (or even a Birdie if the average score is 4.5 or above which is a very high average score for any puzzle).
