On Playing Wordle . . .

They replaced "fetus" as being a bit fraught at the moment . . .

I was trying to wait til tomorrow to disclose the replacement in case anyone else is still playing the original version of the game but it looks like everyone is playing the NYT version now.

AFAIK, these are the words that the NYT has replaced in the game so far, based on their original dates/numbers which have been altered in the game as revised by the NYT because they have been deleted from the original list:

  • Feb 15 2022 Day 241 AGORA
  • Feb 19 2022 Day 245 PUPAL
  • Mar 20 2022 Day 274 LYNCH
  • Apr 10 2022 Day 295 FIBRE
  • Apr 20 2022 Day 305 SLAVE
  • May 05 2022 Day 320 HASTY
  • May 07 2022 Day 322 FELLA
  • May 17 2022 Day 332 FETUS
  • May 18 2022 Day 333 BUTCH

And they have also already announced this upcoming deletion:
  • Jul 20 2022 Day 396 WENCH

The NYT's "justification" for making these changes have included:

1) words that are too similar to another when they are too close together on the list;
2) words that are too difficult to spell;
3) words that have spellings that are too uncommon; and,
4) words that they consider "politically incorrect" or potentially insulting/harmful in some way.

-------------------------------------

This isn't the end of the NYT's tampering w/the word list and my guess is that they will expand the list beyond when the original list ends in 2027 in order to continue the game infinitem.

Interesting. I object to unnecessary change, but kinda agree with removing a few of those words. FIBRE is British spelling, and I don't accept FELLA as a real word. Once you allow slang, it's anarchy!

We recently had HOMER which does have some obscure definitions besides the common slang for home run. Quordle had RALPH which is only slang for vomit as far as I know...

Some people on the Net complained that HOMER wasn't a "real" word but "slang" because they "failed" to solve that word.

However, the NYT let that one pass but there are a variety of other words that people have also complained about, such as EPOXY (as too technical), SAUTE (for not being French) and BLOKE (as being slang used only in England).

Personally, I don't think the word list should be edited at all. Just take it as it is; the good w/the bad. Once you start making exceptions for how/why to delete certain words and insert others, there's no end to it which, in fact, what seems to be the trend.

Why not just randomly use every single five letter word in the OED? Why the need to pass judgment on which words we like and which we don't? I should have known that the NYT would ruin Wordle once they got control - they ruin everything else they touch.

Q: What's a five letter word for one of the captured enemies whom the Romans made to row their warships, as depicted in movies like Ben Hur?
A: I don't know, because apparently no such word exists.

Well, thus ends my participation in Wordle. They sucked the fun out of it for me with this PC nonsense. Just the way I am - call it a character flaw. Maybe I'll get over it at some point. But I doubt it. No biggie - It was just a fun diversion for a time. But I hope everyone else continues to enjoy and have fun with it. Peace, out.

I hate the NYT too. Play here instead. You can even increase the word size if you want.

I questioned their motive for buying it and decided to play as long as it's free. I won't explore any of their media subscription offers. I wish they would keep most words and avoid new slang, but I'll keep playing for now.

Well, the NYT is at it again today! They deleted the word BUTCH and replaced it with today's word instead.

This was a much more difficult than the original word.
The current NYT average for this puzzle is 4.1.

And here's my solution to yesterday's easier substitution for FETUS.

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 3.4.

-------------------------------

I agree that all this playing around w/the word list by the NYT is getting to be a bit much but I've found a SOLUTION to this problem (for as long as it lasts because the NYT seems hellbent on disabling any way to play the game in its ORIGINAL format) which I will discuss in the following post.

For those of you who want to play current or past games of Wordle in its ORIGINAL format, I found this site: The Wordle Time Machine

All you have to do is plug in the date of the game that you want to play and the word from the board from the ORIGINAL Wordle for that day will come up.

If you want to start playing the ORIGINAL Wordle today without any overlap w/the NYT Wordle and w/o having seen a word that has already appeared in the NYT Wordle, you have to start on May 19, 2002 with Game #333.

This "should" be the same word that will be played tomorrow on May 11, 2022 with Game #326 in the NYT Wordle, unless the NYT deletes it too, but further deletions by the NYT, of course, will further muddle the game number comparison between the 2 different versions of the game.

FWIW, you can play ANY game from the ORIGINAL Wordle for ANY date that you like using "The Wordle Time Machine" all the way out to 10/20/2027 which was the scheduled end of the ORIGINAL Wordle.

Word of warning: The NYT already has shut down 2 Wordle "Archive" sites which allowed people to play past ORIGINAL Wordle games and I don't know how long "The Wordle Time Machine" will continue to run before the NYT tries to shut it down too. :(

So, use it while you can. :)

----------------------------------------------

FWIW, I'm going to continue to play the NYT Wordle as long as everyone else is playing it too.

Regardless of which version you are planning to use, if you want to continue to report your results here, just please note WHICH version of the game you are reporting as either the Original or NYT Wordle (in addition to the game #) in order to avoid confusion. Thanks!

Another difficult puzzle for me.
Choice of 3rd word in each case was the key.
The NYT average for this puzzle was 4.1.

Fair warning about today's Quordle - it includes a very obscure word, which I got but strongly object to on the principle of WTF

Ha yes, I knew the word and got it, but I will admit to looking up the definition just now.
