Haha! Reads like a zombie romance, but I couldn't think of any other third guess:

edit: Maybe I could have gone with colon, but the zombie romance would have taken a darker tone.

I wasted a letter guessing 'jolly' and 'lowly' when I already knew there wasn't a second 'L' because of 'alloy,' but it was a hard day for sure.

Seemed like the only possible word to me.

The current NYT average is 4.3.

A solid Par 4 for what for most was a very difficult word.
Only other possibility was NOBLY which of course never occured to me.

The final NYT average was 4.9.

Should I have used my 2nd starter word 1st to
score an Eagle 2 like M Madcap did?

I think not because I don't think I could have solved
the word w/o the U, which again left only 1 possible
answer and a Birdie 3 was still a good score.

Saved Par w/the 3rd guess again with only one
possible solution left.

It's early yet but the current NYT average is 4.7,
which makes this a farily difficult puzzle for most.

Only possible solution but, for me, the U from ADIEU
was the key to solving it in 3.

The final NYT average was 4.3.

Problem was with the second and fifth letters there were just an abundance of possible words, but I am not unhappy with this because I avoided my common mistake of accidentally guessing a word with letters I already knew were wrong. Just plain bad luck it took four guesses to get the right one.

My wife got it in three. She was kind enough not to use CHUMP as a seed word this time...
