On the bench or...better than nothing.

Finally did the heat treat today. Now waiting for the kiln to cool down. Maybe I'll get a tempering cycle in tonight. Meanwhile I did a first test for the pommel. Not sure how I like it. Maybe if I finish it a little more to get better contrast between the curves and straight lines it'll grow on me. We'll see.

One of the scales in there to get a general effect.

Sorry for the slow progress.

When finished, the knife will be a singular piece, a one of a kind, something not seen often today.
I don't care much for the pommel at first glance. The guard area is so free form while the pommel is so machined; the blade grind itself is non symmetric. Something forged and free form would be nice. I know your shop time is limited these days, put it to good use. :)

I really like the knife, looking forward to seeing it in its sheath.

Did you say what the handle material is?

Regards, Fred

I think the pommel suits the single dimension symmetry of the guard, it may seem a little busy but it is subdued enough to agree with the clean lines this dagger will have. You have very interesting designs Patrice. I'm not fond of daggers, but I'm eager to see how this turns out

Fred, I had originally designed a pommel a little like the guard but thought it was a little too busy overall. But I do get your point about needing something a little more free flowing to balance things out. But then again, like Jonathan said, I need to keep some straight or machined lines to balance things. Tried a few things tonight but I think that I need to start at the top and finish blade, guard and handle before I do more work on the pommel. I'll get a better feel for what is needed. At least heat treat is finished. Not rushing anything is the key with something like this.
I do love everything "steampunk" so there may well be an influence in there.

That's why I love this place, some very good eyes and advices. Thanks again for the good words and input, much appreciated.

Sorry, I forgot about the wood. I got it from Larry Shaughnessy. It's Double Dyed/Stabilized (WSSI) Flamed Box Elder Burl. The coloration is a little wild of course but perfectly suited to more artsy projects like this. I really do have to order more stabilized wood when get more play money.

Probably the last update until the finished product. The next improvements will take a lot of time (engraving/sculpting/finishing).
Some features can still change of course but this will mainly be it. Still, if there is something you don't like, feel free to share.

Thanks for looking.

It seems odd to me that the guard is on the top, not the bottom, but I'm going to wait and see what you've got in mind.

Another small update. Started the carving of the guard. I wanted to wait toll the finished product to show you guys but this is taking a little longer than anticipated. :(

Thanks for looking.

Patrice assured us last week that the design was NOT inspired by the Red Wings. And we're supposed to believe that!!! :)

Nice work, Patrice.

Love the carving Patrice; its coming together nicely. I get anxious around this time. Its a great feeling to finish a truly custom piece. Pay no attention to those hockey references. :D

Fred

Yes Fred, anxious that everything will not come together as well as I would have liked. We'll see.
Thanks for the good words guys.
