On the Fence About Strider SMF

They should be known for their stolen valor, fake as the day is long, super armchair warrior founders, one of whom is named after a Lord of the Rings character, apparently because "Burger" on the blade wouldn't have any marketing cachet.

Each purchase of these things promotes the growth of scuzz in its ball form.
Last time I checked this is General Knife Discussion.

And generally speaking, the co-founders of SKI are skunks and not everyone is aware of that. People shouldn't have to go to GBU to hear the truth behind their marketing lies.

Everyone here knows the story.
The story basically broke here.
And guess what? A bunch of us don't care.
The only thing which bothers ME about it is that the knives are about $150 overpriced due to the past hype.
As for the rest, meh.
There are better things to waste time, effort and bandwidth over, at least in my life.:)

The huge finger choil on the SMF makes it seem a little small to me. If they would put the 4.5" version in regular production I would get one of those.

I wish somebody would tell me what the hell you are talking about.

Alright.
Strider (Micky Ray Berger) lied about having an illustrious military career. He was in prison for carjacking when he saaid he was in Somalia doing clandestine ops. Big round of "Nuh huh", "yuh huh" etc, followed, until military records showed that he wasn't all that and a bag of chips.
Then Dwayne Dwyer (the other head dude) was though to be credible, and taught many SWAT teams and things like that...but it turned out he was a huge exaggerator as well.
So, if you like the knives because you think old Dwayne and Mick are cool as all hell, then save your money.

If you want the knife because the knife is good, then get the knife, because it is good (but about $150 overpriced).

That concerned me at first but after all I have seen Strider do for the military and the troops, it rectified any past sins and shows their commitment. I also just talked to Strider and they were very quick to answerer my questions and couldn't do enough for me. To be honest, all the forum trash talk doesnt hold up to my personal Strider experience. They make a hell of a knife and that is all that really matters in the end.

Like I said, I don't care one way or the other about the military angle. In the military, whale humper, burger flipper, whatever, as long as the knife they make is quality.
They did push the price up about $150 over what it would have been otherwise using the military angle though.

I'm torn on the whole Mick/Dwayne thing. But I owned a couple SMF's probably 7-8yrs back and the fit/finish was less than stellar. Sloppy lockup, gritty action, off centered blade, shipped in a plastic baggie and one had several marks on the titanium. That aside, I really like the design of the SMF as a whole. These days I've been heavily considering a double gunner grip digi-camo SMF. Their overall quality seems way up on these folders in recent times too. I'd prefer to examine one hands on before buying, but I have no knife stores around here that carry Strider folders.

I like their knives.
Did they lie? Probably. But as it was mentioned earlier, they also do a lot for our service members through donations and discounts.

Bottom line, Strider knives are proven, like it or not.
And I have had no problems with fit and finish, just remember they aren't meant to be beauty queens.

WOW  I don't buy something cause of the person pushing/making it, I buy what I like. I had a hard time eating MSRP so I also bought used. This will be my main EDC and love showing it off for the reaction I get from folks. :D

The black blade is badass. Damnit, now I want to refinish the blade and I don't even have it yet!

The black oxide bladed models are hard to find. I talked to Duane at a show and he said, "they trickle out". Basically if a flawless oxide coated blade comes off the line they'll pull it. But otherwise they blast almost all of them with tiger stripes.

Thanks, I've made my purchase. I just need to figure out how to finish it in black.

Wow...

I was considering a Strider until I got my ZT 0551. Its a great knife for the money.

But, if you want a Strider get it!

In short, no way is it worth it. Like he said above, IT'S JUST A KNIFE!

That being said, there is _NOTHING_ like a Strider. Very unique, for better or worse.

My PT cost me about $350 bucks out the door. INSANE!

But I still haven't sold it...

To me I feel the handle of a Strider folder are top notch and incedibly tough and overbuilt. Unfortunately the blade
is another story. Definitley not one of the best slicers out there. It helps if you get the stonewash finish because theres
less friction when slicing through things. And youll need to reprofile the edge. It definitley is a one of a kind knife and
you cant really find anything similar from other knife companys. Ive been lusting over an SNG DGG for quite a while now.
