I want just one knife to have for the rest of my life.

What should it be?

It will be used for cooking, hunting, camping, bushcrafting, fighting outlaw bikers, stabbing aggressive bears and dogs, general utility and anything else life has to throw at me.

You may consider this silly but at one time if you lived in the wilderness you had a limited amount of stuff and everything else you had to build. Example the mountain men, Indian tribes, Daniel Boon and Davie Crocket. Just about anybody living west of the Mississippi pre 1840. For me lets say I want to become a monk and live on top of a hill for the rest of my life with no connection to society.

If you could have only one knife to make it for the rest of your life what would it be and remember it is not for some guy living in an apartment in the city but somebody who is in the wilderness.

A high-quality 5 or 6" leuku from J. Martinni or another of the first-class Nordic makers.

Something from Ka-Bar or ESEE. Remember, though, if you want a knife that does it all you'll pay the price in terms of portability. If we're talking two knives, though... then you have some great options.

I'd definitely choose a Kephart from a top notch maker. ML knives makes a fantastic Keppy. A knife designed over one hundred years ago and is still about as close to an all rounder as you could want.

Swiss Army knife.

Good suggestion but it would take way too many stabs to down a biker with 4 inches of leather on. When the Swiss Army Knife comes with a 10 inch bowie I will consider getting one.

Not a bad choice but I just do not care for leuku knives, just not my thing. I also like a guard to keep my fingers from getting sliced if I stab something.

You guys need to remember, I am a monk on top of a hill and all kinds of evil things will be trying to battle me for my awesome strong spiritual powers. Animal armies will try to eat my liver.

I've had a few ESEE's and Survive Knives. All four were excellent.
My favorite would be the Survive Knives GSO 4.1 or 5.1, depending on your needs.
You have a choice of various blade-steels, like CPM-20CV, S90v, CPM-3v, to serve you in terms of toughness or edge-holding ability...

All of you guys should add 1 awesome point to your awesome chart but lets remember I also have to take care of this knife and probably with simple Arkansas stones so tool steels are not reasonable for my request. Something in 1095 or close to it is what I would feel comfortable with.

I need someone to recommend the BK16...........so I cam say NO!.

Of the knives I own it would be my Mora Companion. Its not heavy duty, but it cuts well and is easy to sharpen up. If I could pick one the Fallkniven F1 comes to mind.

Swap out the hardware for stainless flat head screws so if you're in a bind you can use a coin, other knife, thin enough stone, folded sheet metal, or you name it, and you won't have to worry about then rusting

You obviously want something suitable for use in public as well...

O'snap, give yourself 10 awesome points to your awesome chart. This I had never even thought about and should be a serious contender. How good are those at stabbing?

They're pretty darn stab-tastic. :)
Plus two edges for woods use; one gets dull, use the other one.

TOPS Silent Hero. 1095, within your price range, big enough for pesky bears and bikers, and thin enough for cooking and kitchen duties.
