One knife only

Did not mean to insult your choice and embarrass you. What part do you find "unrealistic"? Actually do not answer that as I want to stick to the subject and not let this post be stoled by you.

I gave a scenario and it is your job to recommend knives that fit into this scenario and not how you live. A guy in down town Chicago has a completely different realization of how a knife is used compared to somebody deep in the woods of Georgia. Someone in the Florida Glades has no idea how a guy in the high country of Idaho uses his knife. Just because you do not understand why a person want a knife for a specific reason does not mean it is not valid.

A knife collector and knife user see's things in a very different way.

You haven't embarrassed anyone. About the only thing that's embarrassing is the transparency in the answer you're trying to lead people to responding with, which is to say, your favorite Ontario fighting knife (for all that knife fighting you're doing LOL).

Anyway, I'll bow out now, so we don't both get infracted. Have a nice night, hope those leatherclad bikers don't give you too much trouble on your mountain LOL.

Of the ones that I do own.....Falkniven A-1 most likely..... Perhaps Busse SOB. Blade is not long enough for a one of, though.

Wish I had some experience with a Busse ASH-1. That would probably be it.....

Im telling you, replace the standard bk9 hardware with stainless steel slot head screws and nuts to match. No more worries.

Crap, Quiet knows me too well, he must be drinking from the fountain of youth down there in Florida and is a million years old and has seen this before.

Close but I am looking for the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider.

Now before you start telling me how real and not real stuff is just explain to me how the SAK is going to knock over trees and be-branch them and still clean my fish in the morning. No argument and I don't consider your answer trolling but just enlighten me. I may change my mind and get one.

Its a good idea and I could live with it but the answer is Marine Raider.

You still get an awesome point for trying.

All you guys gave really good answers and I was working on a long list of answers before ending this to communicate with Quiet.

I'd definitely choose a Kephart from a top notch maker. ML knives makes a fantastic Keppy. A knife designed over one hundred years ago and is still about as close to an all rounder as you could want.
I like this design and I have received a few like them from my step dad before he passed away. He used them at his Mountain Man rendezvous. I like them a lot and use one around the house often.
It is not what I am looking for but a very good choice.
My favorite would be the Survive Knives GSO 4.1 or 5.1, depending on your needs
I like this but I would go GSO10 for myself as I like bigger knives. The only drawback is it is S30V and I am not familiar with sharpening it yet. My Spyderco Military is S30V and I have yet to sharpen it yet as I do not want to mess it up because I suck at sharpening knives. I can get by with 1095 but something like S30V would take a lot of patients when using Arkansas stone. I also do not like the removable scales. If I got this I would glue them on and pin them.
Very nice choice though.
Busse ASH1 in .18 or .22 stock.
Really nice but once again a hard tool steel. I do not know what INFI steel is but I believe I remember it being S7 or something like that, way too hard for my simple world. Very nice though.
P.S. Also way out of my price range, I am a simple monk not Keith Richards.
Demko AD-10 in M390.
I do not like folders, really nice folder though. I may recommend it to pilgrim’s who make it up the hill to obtain my vast knowledge.
Benchmade 162 Bushcraft.
Very Nice and may get that for my kid for Christmas to mate up with his Military. Not for me though as the steel is just not what I desire. I am going to keep my eye out on this knife, I like it.
TOPS Silent Hero. 1095, within your price range, big enough for pesky bears and bikers, and thin enough for cooking and kitchen duties.
Really nice design but I already have it in the form of my Boker Plus Vox Rold. I like the design but am finding it hard to like the knife. I just need to use it a few more times before I truly decide. Good suggestion but not what I am looking for.

Lol, true.

I need to get serious now.

There have been a lot of good choices but none that match what I need.

The SAK is just not even close to being a good one knife.

.

A lot of other suggestions are not feasible do to tool or erotic steels. All I have to sharpen with is an Arkansas stone and I do not want to spend 12 hours sharpening extremely hard stainless and tool steel.

The BK9 is close. It is a big bowie and of a simple knife steel.

You asked us " If you could have one knife...." For me its a SAK. If you don't like that answer, why ask?

And what's an "erotic steel"?

Check out the buck hoodlum. I know nothing about it except it is roughly the same size as a bk9 and has the screws you want. Or you could just swap them out as NJBILLK said.

To end this thread I am going with the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider with most of your all choices as a close second.

Those GSO and Busse's are really nice but out of my price range, I will go back to collecting guns before I pay that much for a knife.

I am glad to learn about the Benchmade 162, I will be checking that out in the near future.

Good answers, I appreciate them all.

If you ever learn how to tig weld in an aerospace factory you will know what it means. It is just uncommon steels. Titanium use to be considered an erotic. Most of your modern stainless steels I would consider an erotic.

Listen, you train with your team on the weekends, right? Come on man, then you KNOW that skills will always outweigh equipment. First of all, you can indeed clean fish, de-branch trees, and so on with a SAK. You mention needing an offensive capability, well ok then! Use your SAK to make spears, or even better, surround your mountain retreat with a ring of traps, tiger pits and so on.

Hey, I love large badass knives as much as the next guy, and I have spent many weekends off in the woods with any number of different fixed blades. But honestly, for any number of tasks, I found my SAK to be the most used.

So in the end, get you a big Marine Raider. Do it, man. I think those are bad-ass knives, and if I didn't already have other fixed blades as part of my tried and true kit, I would get one. I'm suggesting however, that you don't limit yourself. Use your innovation, and training, to see how just because a SAK can't be used to chop down a tree, or stab the bad guys...that you couldn't use skills and a smaller knife and/or multi-tool in order to accomplish those same objectives.

Did anybody recommend that knife? Maybe I missed it.

It sounds like all you wanted was someone to agree with choice you already made. If so you could have just asked if it was a suitable knife for your improbable scenario.

Yeah. What he said. Why didn't you just ask in the first place instead of asking for responses from people that you were just going to reject? That's pretty rude, in my opinion.

The last time I had a SAK I was about 8 but I am going to get one soon and use it at a fall hike and see how I like it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good deal. Incidentally, don't forget, you can always get a more rugged form of SAK in the form of one of the multi-tools out there. The Leatherman 300 is the one I use, which has pretty much all of the tools of my two or three SAKs, but the blades and saw are bigger. May be something to consider.

10-4.

I have the Leatherman Mut for my AR but do not carry it much as it is usually tucked in the carrying case.

I will read some SAK reviews and study for awhile. Thanks for the suggestion.

Let me see if I've got this straight-

Yet another "You can only have ONE knife" thread. And we all know how realistic that scenario is.

The OP wants a fighting knife that can chop down trees and clean fish. Because of course a knife well suited for chopping down a tree would be excellent for cleaning fish and game.

The OP wants a knife to take with him when he becomes a monk and lives on a hill, but he's worried about having to fight off outlaw bikers. Yep, those poor hilltop monks, they're always getting attacked by outlaw bikers.

Personally, I don't think this thread ever had a foothold in reality, but it has been amusing, so I give it points for that.

And as far as mountain men, Indian tribes, Daniel Boone, and Davy Crockett, and all manner of pioneers, I'll wager that they used more than one cutting tool to survive in the wilderness. It wouldn't surprise me if they carried an axe, hatchet, saw, etc. After all, such people generally had pack horses to carry a lot of stuff, and some had wagons.

Why on earth would anyone in their right mind, who knew anything about wilderness survival, enter the wild for the purpose of living there, and choose to bring only ONE cutting tool with them? But of course, like I said, we aren't dealing with reality in this thread, are we.
