One Year With The Spartan Harsey Folder

Thanks for the review. I bought my SHF "Spartan Babe" with the intension of carrying it, but instead have just been admiring it at home and carrying my other knives from Hinderer, Spyderco, Benchmade, or a couple of small CRK Inkosi. I just bought a used Spartan Pallas in black this week, that I do plan to carry, as it is already used and sharpened without the box.

I can see myself carrying the SHF if I have a pair of them, one to admire the engraving while pristine and one to carry and wear up - so, maybe I will buy the Damascus SHF and will start to carry the one I have now, or I'll at least carry the Pallas. My pockets are usually full, and my knives definitely will rub against speed loaders of .357, coins, lights, and earbuds.
.357: one and done Son!

I have yet to see their Damascus blades in person, but from what I've seen they look outstanding. I wouldn't mind getting the smaller version in Damascus, I particularly like the versions with the bronzed hardware - just waiting for the right one.

I'd love to get one of the rune models with the longer blade to go along with my S&W 640 Pro. I've carried my Spyderco police for 30 years pretty much daily because it's just so flat and comfy. Is the SHF pretty flat in the pocket? Maybe I could change things up a little for the rest of my years with a SHF and my Glock 29 for an edc combo. Who knows, Thanks for the nice review and pics. 👍

....if I had to choose between a 3rd SHF or a 2nd large CRK, it would really be a coin toss of just how I was feeling and what mood I was in that day, but most likely more often than not, I would personally choose the more robust heft of the SHF over the sleeker but cleaner cut CRK.

Whelp, it appears I didn't have to choose. (and it appears my wife does pay attention).
Yesterday was my birthday, and my son hands me this little present, and low and behold, it is my 3rd SHF!

My 1st SHF was the paisley edition; my wife couldn't decide on a wedding gift for me, and so she told me to just pick my own gift, something in the same ballpark price that I spent on her...
*(she got gold infinite earrings and a Ti-ecodrive watch)

My 2nd SHF was the ladies of freedom edition, that my wife bought me on our anniversary trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg a few years back. Got to visit that giant knife store in the smokey mountains, and she insists we go back to customer service, when SURPRISE! They have a package on hold for her/(me).
*(I honestly can't even remember what I got her that year, lol)...

And now this year for my birthday, the fir tree edition w/ the Chad Nichols Damascus blade, (and pocket lint under the clip)... On our anniversary trip this year, we stayed in the mountains of WV. I walked into the bathroom of the cabin we were at and chuckled. She said, "what's so funny?" So I had her come into the bathroom and asked, "remember the knife you got me with the statue of liberty on it?" (She did), well the shower curtain had a very similar tree design on it as the SHF fir tree, so I mentioned that too her, and lo and behold, I now have 3...
*(Not near as romantic on my part, but I did put 4 new Perelli's on her Pathfinder for her Birthday this year, to the tune of nearly $1000, because she needed new tires. I guess a little romantic if you consider that I do care about her safety)...
.
.
So I guess now, if I were being completely honest, I'd probably by myself a 2nd large (Bog Oak) CRK, before I bought a 4th SHF... because statistically, if I just wait long enough, my wife will probably buy me another SHF within the next few years...

Amazing write-up! The SHF has become my favorite folder (I've got the large plain-jane variant), and it always makes me happy to see others enjoy it the way I do!

The SHF (North West edition) is my daily carry. I’ve been systematically selling off all my other knives since getting it. I honestly have zero urge to carry anything else. There are a few other engraving designs I still want, a full size Fir is at my local dealer so I may grab that. I wanted a Plague Dr but missed out.

I should have bought the fir tree when it was 20% off

Can anyone chime in with how it feels in hand with regards to being grippy or not? Do the scales feel overly smooth where it feels almost slippery when using it in cold environments? Hopefully the laser marking or engraving provides some traction.

Being titanium, I imagine it doesn't feel too cold to the touch in the cold either, right?

That's two of the things I hate about my Cold Steel Code 4s, those dang anodized scales are so smooth and slick! It's downright dangerous at times. And being aluminum scales, they're quite cold to the touch making your grip even worse in the cold. They're such great knives otherwise.

I had been eyeing one of these larger SHF for awhile now but have always passed over it partly out of fear of it having those issues. Sure is a looker though!

I find the handle to fit my hand perfectly. I haven't used it too hard yet but I've carried mine as a edc for a little over a month and keep going back to it with plenty of other options I could choose. O have the Join or Die variant and the Plague Doctor currently. 20230212_122846.jpg

Do the scales feel mostly smooth and lacking traction or is there a bit of friction provided by the engraving and surface treatment?

They feel pretty dang grippy to me. All that jimping adds a lot of grip, plus the way the handle is setup it really grabs onto your hand. I haven't used mine in real cold weather or really even used it while wet yet though.

Which one would you carry, and which ONE would you keep as a collector piece? I kinda want to protect the nicest blade, and won't worry about using up the blade on the second one as much. But I'd like to show off the nicest one.

SAFE QUEEN THIS NICEST ONE - my favorite?

BUT CARRY THIS ONE?

I'm really jumping on this SHF wagon and have been carrying a CN Damascus Plague Doctor for the past month! It had some lock rock as new so sent it to Spartan which they repaired and had back in my hand within a week. No muss no fuss, Spartan Knives know how to treat their customers, my knife is now perfect! My Spartan experience was so good, and my current SHF knife so good, I went and bought another! Should be seeing my new CN Damascus Join or Die here within the week. I wanted the S45VN Join or Die, but I'm late to the party and it's all sold out. I do like the Damascus as a daily and don't find any issues with edge retention. I always carry a backup knife which has been a ADV Badlands Bowie (another awesome knife) as of late. SHF are truly awesome users and really fit my bill, I'll post some pics once I get my second. I was on the fence with these for sometime, glad I finally made the leap.
