Ongoing Details for the 2016 Bladeforums knife.

Jake, you and Charlie and this lady I know are wonderful for increasing my Appalachian vocabulary.

For a moment I thought the Forum Knife had been changed to a Farmer's J very kool whatever the Worm Runs or Groovy Indians..:D:cool:

Actually, I like that light coloured example more, it's closer to the toffee colour of the original which I really prize. Dark brown is er, dark brown..;)

Thanks, Will

The toffee color is actually from years of pocket wear and use and oil. It was originally much darker. These forum knives will get that pocket worn look after you've carried the knife and it's been passed down for several generations. ;)

The jigged bone used by Robeson and Cattaraugus had some differences. I asked Charlie (CNoyes) about it. And we both wondered if they both came for Rogers. It would be a good question for BRL.

Also, I should note that you won't be struck by lightning for calling it worm groove. My point was that the original description was worm free. Collectors come up with all sorts of names. Some of them stick like "whittler", for example. Companies pick up these names and invent their own as well.

Oh my oh my oh my!! Up on GEC website:

The color is pretty close to the "fresh" Rogers Indian Trail on this Cattaraugus...

All very interesting...

But this (below) is what Cattaraugus bone looks like when fresh.

No brown dye left at all where the bone was blended to the bolsters.
On used Catts, the thin layer of brown gets worn down to 'honey,' while the bald spots get darkened by dirt and oil, so they also look like honey.

It is possible that the whittler is a later knife, but the bone should not be brown where the bone was polished down...
not on Catt's, not on any older factory knife.

Contrast this to later Case stag, where the shaped handles were stained orange after the handles were blended to the bolsters.

Also note the very different jigging styles - Rogers Indian Trail on the 12829, which is what Catt usually used.

BRL...

Jake-what is that bottom knife you posted in #381, a type of lobster tail, but not an orange blossom special? The jigging is coming out fantastic, and, at least to this partiality color blind guy, the color is beautiful. Kind of like the "Drover" appellation as well, makes me think of an older movie about itinerant sheep herders in Australia. Can't think of the name, with Robert Mitchum..."the Sundowners " I think. The look of the final assembly should be drool worthy, including but not limited too, the nice big single spring.
Thanks, Neal
Ps for the longest time I thought "orange blossom specials" were somehow endemic to bluegrass pickers and grinners.😎

Neal, It's a 4-blade gunstock lobster whittler. Charles (chuko) is the lobster expert around here. But from what I've read, NYKco called them "orange blossom" in honor of a Civil War Regiment. In their day, they were one of the most expensive knives.

No doubt, but I don't have many years at all in front of me...;) so it's a question of needing one's toffee cake and eating it :D

Out of curiosity, do these have brass or steel liners & pins? (it's hard to tell from the photos posted on the GEC site)

please update how many left for reserve, thanks!

103 still available this morning.

Update on the release date: Chris reminded me that GEC is closing for a week in early October, and that we can probably expect the 2016 BF knives sometime shortly thereafter. I'm guessing around the third week in October or so, but could be sooner. No specific date has been set per GEC's normal parameters.

Much Obliged Barry!

Where will I fit the 2016 BFC Traditional Forum's Annual knife? ;)

A quick pic of 10 years worth of BFC annuals. :)

If you look directly above the CSC forum knife you will see two(2) knife butts pointing to a promising branch. Or, merely a suggestion, in your pocket?😊
T.E.-sorry it was too good to pass up.
Neal
