Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

And grownstar, between this thread, my two on AR15.com, and facebook, I don't mean to sound cocky but I guarantee I've sold a couple hundred of these. Blade HQ always had them in stock. Now they always have some different variant out of stock. If they would offer G10 checkered handles (in colors too) like I've been telling them, they would sell even better.

Haha I have absolutely no trouble believing this! I've even seen a couple more folks posting theirs in the EDC thread. They're being carried, bro!

Well I have some bad news to report about the blade swap. I noticed last night that the black blade in the round handles was at 100% lock up. I don't think its necessarily always gonna be the case, but it certainly kept these two particular knives from being able to swap blades.

Thanks for the update, man. Good to know. And I must agree that the whole stand-off look makes the knife 10x better!

I received my Utilitac II based on this threads advice... Overall, I'm impressed with the knife; however, the blade grind is a bit uneven.

Sorry to hear about the grind being a little off. Does it hinder it's cutting performance in any way?

And I'm glad your overall reaction is positive. You can't beat what you get for the price, unfortunately that also means you're not getting a perfect knife. Still, I have knives that are way more expensive that suffer from similar problems.

Which version did you get, by the way?

Well, it's something that I'll need to fix: I'm hitting the top edge of the primary bevel at 40 degrees inclusive. It's not a big deal though, and doesn't change my positive opinion of the knife. Like you, I've experienced this on much more expensive knives.

I purchased the clip-point version with the rounded handle. Everything else on this knife is really top notch--it's a lot of value for so little cost. I'm just amazed at how smooth the action is.

Same here! I ended up cranking the pivot pretty damn tight, to eliminate any play whatsoever, and it still fires out like crazy.

Got the Utilitac today. Very solid knife. However, the lockup was already at 100%, and hard as hell to disengage. So I've already ordered another one, and will be returning this one. If I can get one with good lockup, I think I'll have a great EDC. I'm very glad I got the rounded handle and tanto blade. Makes for an awesome combination!

im very impressed with the knife. I have the rat 1 which is also great but the liner lock is much thinner. Ill use the rat for hunting/gutting, fishing and camping. But the utilitac I use in the warehouse at work to cut thick plastic banding off of pallets. It requires some torque which i feel more comfortable doing with the utilitac since it is built so thick and durable.

Very impressed, probably tied with the rat 1 for the best knife for the money that I own.

Aus 8 is awesome, easy to sharpen and stays sharp longer than 8cr13mov that i have dealt with

Sorry to hear your engagement was out of whack. Once it gets taken care of, beat the hell out of it and let us know how it holds up. I hope it's a quick process for ya, buddy.

Wow quite a few versions of this knife. Might have to try one out.

Yes, you might! I'm sure you'll find one that suits your needs. You get a lotta knife for peanuts.

Awesome pic, brother. I'll have to pick up one of the satin tantos when I get the chance. I just love the grinds on this blade.

I saw a picture of this knife in the EDC thread and figured it was some rare, or Russian, or impossible to find, old school designer knife. It has that feel to it, though. Then it turns out there's this whole thread about it. Durrrrr.

The blade opens smooth as glass and the lock engagement feels/sounds rad. Very sweet for 25 bucks.

Full disclosure: the first one that arrived a couple of days ago from Amazon had a lock at about 90%. It felt great but the lock was too far over. Called them and they sent a replacement immediately. The replacement is dope and I'll probably be ordering a tanto version as well just to check out.

Yeah, losing the recurve would be an improvement. Still, it has a lot of good things going for it and the recurve is slight enough that it shouldn't require special tools to sharpen. I agree with you, though.

I have to admit my skepticism at first. However, after a week of receiving, modding, carrying and using it, I am thoroughly impressed. It is a lot of knife for the money IMO. It has good ergonomics (despite it's quirky appearance) decent steel and a smooth action and solid lock up. Other than being a tad bit heavy, I can find no faults with mine. It's a keeper. :D

That blade finish looks sweet, Electrik. I have no skills with that kind of stuff but I would definitely try that mod on the Utilitac II if I could.

My lockup is at like 85 or 90% it's a 25$ knife why would I send it back for that? It's solid and doesn't slip better then I can say about some other knives *cough spyderco cat*
