Ontario Utilitac II - Best modern folding knife under $30?

Yep... amazing knife for the money. Got mine shipped to my door for $24 and change. Can't be beat I don't think. Best deal out there right now. And it has such great action... so smooth.

You got that right! By any chance, have you done a video on it? I saw a couple of your vids the other day...interesting stuff

How sharp do they come ootb?

Not very, IMO. I put in a few minutes on the Sharpmaker, however, and got it pretty sharp. It was a bit of a different technique, sharpening a tanto. Never done it before, and I kept worrying about rounding out the edge transition. Oh well, whatever happens, it's still only a $25 investment, right?

My black blade/coffin handle came extremely sharp, I actually filleted a flap of skin off my thumb closing it the first time.

All 4 of mine were quite sharp as well. I didn't cut myself, but they were cleanly slicing paper with no effort at all.

My tanto came sharper than some of my Kershaws. Easily sliced copy paper, and even went through phone book paper. I was impressed.

I'm a noob sharpening and didn't have the right tools for this mod but I made it work. And now it's giving me lots of sharpening practice. Almost as sharp as it came. I'll get there with some work.

Doesn't matter if you're new at this, it looks good

Thanks for the pics. This thread could definitely use more!

Wow that really looks good without the forward grind line. Great work! I may have to do that once I get a belt sander.

I know your 'Tac has some serious comp in that Opera and Gayle Bradley, but have you taken her out for a spin lately? ;)

Yessir, I'm rocking what I affectionately call my "Taiwan Twins". She's in my off-side pocket as we speak, and my GB is on my strongside. I have put the lanyard back on to give it some time to see how I feel about it. It is insane to me how quickly and smoothly this knife flashes open. A simple flick outwards on the stud and a millisecond later "snick" the knife is ready to take care of business. I willingly maintain that it's crazy the amount of quality shown in a knife this inexpensive.

I'm aware that I'm once again throwing compliments at a knife that's now received 12 pages of compliments, but honestly, I am expecting this knife to be $80 in a few months' time. And people will pay that and be fine with it after they see what they're getting. It amuses me to think that you could do a "blind taste test" with this knife where you remove the origin markings, and show it to someone who's really knowledgeable on knives and tell them it cost a hundo, and watch them go on and on about "Oh, and see the heavy liners, contributing to that bank vault solid lock up!" and "See the blade finish, as befitting a knife this expensive!" and so on...

Then you tell 'em that exquisite pate they were just gushing about is actually mashed up hot dogs LOL

Dang it guys, I just had to open this thread. lol

Needless to say I have two one the way!

I ordered a full serrated black tanto with the coffin handle and a PE satin recurve with the contoured handles.

I figured with this combo I could effectively try them all while only buying two.

So I just bought one of these NIB on the forum last week for 20 delivered and fees and as soon as I got it out of the box all I could say was wow! Even my wife who knows nothing about knives held it and said, "Great this had to be expensive."

This is a fabulous knife for the money! Opens well, sharp out of the box and no blade play. Absolutely fabulous!
