Open Fire Cooking; Bone-In Chicken Noodle Soup

Well, if you’ve read the review then you know I’ve set about setting up a primitive camp using only this one knife, a SOG Super Bowie.

Today I put on a pot of bone-in chicken noodle soup. With the high winds I wasn’t really comfortable with the idea of using the grill and thus having to keep an eye on two fires at the same time, so the grill became my work table for today.

I used some fat wood shavings, a few small fatwood sticks, some dry twigs from downed trees, and a Swedish fire steel to start the fire.

I batoned a little of the seasoned Birch I’ve been chopping on with random sharp objects.

and got the fire going

Then I started getting the soup ready to cook while the fire developed some embers. I whittled a digging stick to dig up some wild onions.

Then I started cutting up the chicken.

Cut up the vegetables, the wild onions, some carrots, and some button mushrooms

Put it all in a stock pot with a bale handle and added a few spices and put it on to cook.

Of course now I have a little time to kill so I look at the net to see what’s happening on B.F.. Lol, this fire-pit is only about 200 feet from my back door...gotta love routers.

After it boiled until the meat was good and done and the carrots were tender I added in some wide egg noodles.

And as the fire burned down I put the pot on the lower notch on the pot hanger and let it simmer for a bit

Then I took it inside and served it for supper, and man it sure was good.

My fiance makes a good bone-in-chicken soup as well :thumbup:

I like the use of the camp pot too, mine only sees use maybe twice a year :o

Oops...sorry (not really, but it sounds polite lol) Well....this is the first time mine has been used this year.

Done in my kitchen where I could add some bullion that would be fine, however to me when done that way in the field the soup looses a lot of flavor. Also in some situations the fats in the skin could actually be just as beneficial to your well-being as the meat and the marrow.

Getting rid of the chicken skin before or after cooking it, should be considered a capital sin... :D :D :D
Nah, I can see how someone worried about loosing weight or suffering any kind of health problems would want to skin it. If so, do it before cooking, otherwise you won't discard much fat.

I know it's not "politically correct"... or whatever, but I prefer not to skin mine...it's actually one of my favorite parts of fowl.

Thanks...lol, along with the internet my back yard also often has bobcats, rabbits, groundhogs, deer, squirrels, owls, hawks...though it's never really been a survival situation, it does often seem like a wilderness, and it is where I sometimes hold classes.

Besides it is Wilderness and survival skills....right?

Great pics and thanks for sharing. Your post makes me wonder how many of us overlook opportunities at our backdoor. We get out several times a week because we take advantage of National Forrest that is minutes away from home. It may not be the best place to go but still beats the hell out sitting inside.
 
Yep nice cook'n. Chicken soup is one of my favorites - that and navy bean!

Mistwalker way to go I like it. My Mom used to do that years ago. but she put the pot on the wood stove we had to heat the house. Man did that taste so good.

That looks like some taisty chicken soup. My mom makes her's like that. :) I have 5 Dutch ovens but I still want one of those blue stock pots. :thumbup:

Next time you make soup, invite me... I'll bring the beverages :)

Wildman is right, I need one of those pots for camping, too.
