Open Fire Cooking; Bone-In Chicken Noodle Soup

Great job bro but ya must have struggled cutting the veggies with that tiny knife eh !!!!:D

Only thing I would have had to add would have been some Tabasco....that goes into or on top of everything I eat !!!!!;)

looks delicious! thanks for sharing the pic's ...I must make Chick N soup!:D

I do this in phases. First I put in the chicken skin-side-down with just a bit of water. I braise it to release some fat and get a little browning on the chicken as the water dries up. Then I add water to cover the chicken and cook it for about a half hour before filling the pot up with the rest of the water and ingredients. I want to get the most out of the chicken and leave a bit more body in the veggies. I like mine with rice rather than the noodles.

Yeah, the campfire in the backyard near the net is good. Been doing that for a long time

Forgot to say nice campsite mist
Furthermore! if any of ya'll can make a hammock in the range of the wireless, it is really nice! Especially if the hammock is a sitting hammock that the deer have become used to :)

Your post makes me wonder how many of us overlook opportunities at our backdoor. It may not be the best place to go but still beats the hell out sitting inside.

Unfortunately all I have is a concrete jungle in my backyard ... oh and can't forget the fire escape. :(

Mistwalker: that chicken soup looks muy delicioso

Thanks for the comments on skinning. I'm on a weight reduction program so I usually do that. However, you have to be careful or you'll end up with chicken that tastes "dry" (even though it's in a soup). If I were younger and thinner, I wouldn't worry about it.

I too need to lose 25lb. But as Mike mentioned before roast the skin over fire with the outside of the skin to the fire the inside add some garlic a tomato and roast it till crunchy... Now im hungry and i kidd you not im drolling like a dog..

Thanks all, I'm really glad you liked the post.

When I was a kid we had a wood-burning fireplace with a pot hanger inside and we used to cook stuff in a dutch oven in it. Plus we trapped and fished commercially so we did even more cooking over a fire out in the field. Once your hooked on it no other foods taste quite the same.

Normally I add some green tobasco (I like the flavor better) but I was out this time so I added a little Tony Chachere's original Creole seasoning and some Italian seasoning blend of herbs and spices.

Yes, rice is great too. I was wishing I had some wild rice on hand when I started this but since I had none but did have egg noodles in the cupboard I opted for those instead.

I'm glad some of you learned a few things, that was the whole idea behind it...well that and I just enjoy it.

I have only put the pics in my personal albums here because I haven't seen a place for them elsewhere, but I do a lot of hiking, training, and photography in State Forests here. There is little wilderness in the S.E. that isn't state park or national parks.

mistwalker,

My last girlfriend really loved green tobasco whereas I'm pretty neutral on it. I began experiencing discontent from her and she started insinuating that I was trying to dump her (which I was not). One of my responses was "If I were trying to off-load you, would I have bought three bottles of that green tobasco when it was on sale?" My impeccable logic was, unfortunately, unpersuasive.:(

It was for me :)

It's been my experience that in dealings with the opposite sex logic is seldom a useful tool

Nicely done man!

Thanks!

That looks like some taisty chicken soup. My mom makes her's like that. :) I have 5 Dutch ovens but I still want one of those blue stock pots.

Heber

I want a plain stainless 3 liter one but still haven't found one yet.

I LOVE dutch ovens for cooking, especially in my back yard....but packing even a small one for several miles is a pain in the neck

Ever tried to carry one of the small aluminum dutch ovens? Mine are all cast iron so I don't know if the aluminum would be light enough to carry (as part of a group's gear, for example).

I don't know what to say other than "I feel your pain".
I think you need to immediately ban all Meg Ryan movies from date night hence forth!
