Openers, Picks and Steel Thumbnails

Low class, but the Key Sergeant is what I'm using. Works fine.

cant post a pic at the moment, but I wanted to thank PTRADCO (Brad) for the GAKC knife pick,,my first one!

Well, thanks to ptradeco and all the fine folks who participated in this thread, I got bitten by the steel thumbnail bug. Some scrap 6-4 Titanium, 1/8" brass rod and a piece of preban elephant ivory I got for a few bucks off etsy and some elbow grease and here she is:

Apologies, the ivory is a bit washed out in this photo

Greg that looks great! Awesome job.

Thanks for the kind words Blaine and Brad.

pertinux that's a good question- it took a few tries to get the undercut angle correct so that it would fit nicely into the thumbnail slots of my folders yet leave enough material to keep the edge robust.

... I tried a few times to write out a question about the "front angle" of your blade key, but struggled to describe what I was asking about in a way that differentiated it from the (corner) angles already visible at the front edges in your first picture. Hence, I simplified my question into the above, "Does it work?"

And here, you've provided a picture and explanation of exactly what I was curious about.

Thanks.

:)

I was going to let this thread go into hibernation again but since it is back up I will add a couple of new ones I have acquired:

average gimp, thanks to you I have a Key Sergeant now. Also thanks to you they are adding Pocket Knife Opener to the already long list of uses for the tool. Photo omitted as it appears earlier in the thread.

The antler tipped one was made for NWKC. A tad nicer than our knife club's, GAKC, version. I am jealous. Wish the maker had signed it.

The other was made by Camillus. Would be nice if they had put a tang stamp on it.

I have some Camillus blade blanks in various stages of manufacture that SMKW was selling after they bought the late company's bits and pieces- there's probably a few potential openers there.

I got so excited I forgot to comment on that great looking knife and pic!!! I only kept one set of them for myself and let me tell you before I shipped them out I was tempted to keep them all!! I still can't believe I have the handles.

I have an acquaintance that is a custom jeweler/watchmaker. Recently I showed him a pick made by Ken Erickson and after a few days he told me it was just perfect for cracking the case backs off old watches. He asked if I could get him a few for Christmas presents to pass out to some of his friends. Well, I talked to Ken about it and he delivered these six beauties to me in Janesville this last month. Needless to say the watch maker was ecstatic with them. Hope you like them as well!

Clockwise from 12 o'clock:

Mammoth, Ivory, Bone, Reverse Side, Gold Lip and White Pearl

Sorry Ken, my picture taking ability is quite sub-standard. Folks, they are much nicer than this photo indicates!
