Opinel mod ideas | Show me your modded Opinel's

Here’s a #6 I modified a little bit. I rounded off the bottom of the handle and added the easy-open notch.

A bit of a warning, if you take much off of the point of the handle on the bottom, the tip will be proud and you’ll have to remove part of that as well.

I like the easy open notch. How does it feel when you hold the knife in it's open position?

It feels fine to me, but I don’t typically use my knives for any prolonged time. I just generally cut or slice something and put it away as opposed to whittling, skinning a large animal, etc.

Kevin-B: If you will go back and search the archive, both Traditional and General, you will find quite a few threads on Opinels, including discussions of mods, Opinel art, and functional issues. There is also quite a bit of material on the wider web.

The only things that are needed in an Opinel mod is to sand down the point of the handle on the side opposite the blade (since it is uncomfortable on your palm) and to add an easy open notch.
This one has a subtle easy open. I like the one Sacto did a bit better.

'Course, it's lots of fun to play around even more.

Seems to be a bunch of people making some pretty impressive mods in France.

Pinnah had a file on Opinel tuning. Just some of the basic things an Opi might need to be better.
The locking ring stuff is outdated since Opinel has changed the ring. Still an interesting read.

And there is also the issue of the wooden handle getting tight in humid conditions.
You can soak the pivot in oil, soak the whole knife in oil, or melt wax, vaseline, or something else thicker into the pivot.
All work.

Love me an Opi. 12c27 is a fav budget stainless of mine and Opinel's 12c27mod is pretty darn good for the price.

Now that I am retired, I find I don't carry them as much. I generally have a smaller knife in my pocket.

Kevin-B Kevin-B So, when do we get to see the results?
To be totally honest, i’m still deciding what i’m gonna do with it. I can’t change the entire handle in to something else, since i don’t have any nice spare parts of wood or stag.

I think that I’m gonna keep it like this. For now. The reason im gonna keep the wood like it is, is because i like the blank color of the wood, and i can’t get any wood stain since my country is in full lockdown. And if i were to order some it would be way more expensive then what they sell for in physical stores. I’m gonna put some clear lacquer on it to seal the wood. And i’m gonna read up on how to cave. I really wanna carve or burn a fun little pattern in it. I’ve also been intrigued by fully charring? Burning? The handle black and lightly sanding it so some of the wood comes through.

Like i said in my first post here, i’m really not creative and i dont wanna mess up and do something irreversible.

Thanks for you question.

For some reason I thought you had started on it. The charring sounds cool. Keep us posted when you do it.

It's pretty hard to get Beech to take a stain darkly.
If you char it then it will take the stain well.

Just to he clear. To start charring I’d basically just have to keep a jet lighter to it? Or a blowtorch? There is no prep needed before hand?

But i should receive some clear lacquer one of these days. So i think ill just coat the knife. Since i like the plain wood color. And be done with it for now.

After a quick search i found this picture. I really like the pattern on it. Shouldn't be too hard for me to do ;)
I think i’ll go ahead and try to replicate this.

Excuse the rather bad quality of the picture. I couldn’t find a better pic of it.

This one started life as an Ebauche model. I had to fill part of the blade slot so the spoon wouldn't leak. So I made the blade into a sheep foot.

I used a cheap harbor freight belt sander to do the grinding, with a container of water to dip it in, to keep the blade cool.

I think that if you go for a lambsfoot shape, you would be taking material off the back of the blade as well as the end. That might require removing material from the slot side of the handle, so that you could still get the blade open.

O.B.
Outstanding work sir.
