yeah... but that handle though...
I could probably strip out the blade from a garden knife and put it in a standard 8, but I think it'd be cheaper just to file a standard 8.
That's exactly what I did, take the good blade off the bad garden knife handle. You have to file the stop a bit to make it fit, but you end up with a better knife.

These handles are outstanding!

I picked up a couple of the 'carve your own handle' versions and I think I might use yours for inspiration!

What are the pins for on the center one? Did you use stain and if so, what kind? Varnish?
Thank you kindly! I bought cherry and walnut handles. The cherry is stained with mahogany since it was very dull in the pattern, and the walnut in the pic is stained with chim smoke ( does it call that in english?) in Danish-oil. I did another in "smoked" walnut. I then put the knife in a small box with a cap of amonia and waited 24h. The pins are 0,25mm brass nails used to pin art canvas :)

draggat draggat I did a design in kind of a double D shape, and I needed to make a nailditch to rech the blade
The smoked walnut in the bottom and the stained on top
I kind of like the distressed look, but at the same time looking mint. I did a acid wash on the blade and bolster of the smoked one.
Danish oil and a lot of polishing makes for a nice shine

Thanks for the response and the extra pics, they look great! I like the way you did the nail nick notches a lot better than the easy open notch. Those finishes really set them apart too.

I did find the "carve our own" a rellay nice service from Opinel, quite fun and with half the job done from Opinel one could focus on design over construction :) I only wish there was a better way of keeping the front part of the wood under the bolster from grippin the blade after being wet, than oiling it that is...

Opinel definitely took care of the hardest part of knife making with these, at least to my eyes!

It's the same with pretty much all wood friction folders - probably my most often carried type of knife. I just try not to get that portion of the knife wet. :)

(pst, I think it's a feather.)

Yep - actually two feathers that come together at the quills. Viewed from the spine of the knife, they look like wings.

That is a work of art.

what did you do to the blade and did you carve that fern?

I can't take any credit for the custom work on this one. I bought it off of the exchange here. I asked about it and as I recall, one person did the wood and another did the acid etching on the stainless blade and metal. The feathers appear to be laser etched, but, I suppose it is possible they could have been carved. The etching or carving is pretty deep, not just on the surface. I like it a lot too. The customizers did top notch work. 😊
