First of all, I'm groovy with him making whatever he can make. But he was making money when he sold me one at $117. The price on the website (sold out) is now $146.25, or about $30 more than the margin was at $117.
So, unless he was selling them at a loss at $117 - which of course he was not - he's got a good margin on each knife. At least $40 - $50, unless I have my head up my rear end, which is quite possible. He's certainly entitled to make money on this thing, because he's putting up the capital and taking the risk. I commend him for that, as I do Brother Spark on the Skyline deal. But lets just be clear that these dealer exclusives are not done as merely a courtesy to the consumer. There's some serious coinage flying back and forth.
No doubt there is profit. I wonder what the spread was on the varying prices? 50/50? $117 seemed like a damn good deal given it's just a few more bucks than an S30V.
It makes me wonder why my local knife shop charges $189 for a stock P2. He wonders why the gather dust...
