Last week I ordered a Lansky Deluxe sharpening kit and I received the package today. *When I opened the package I noticed that one of the hones was missing. *

I grabbed my phone and started to call Amazon customer service and as it rang I started looking at the system more carefully when I realized they sent the Diamond Deluxe kit. *I immediately hung up before anyone answered haha. *$31 shipped for a Lansky Diamond Deluxe kit is not too shabby at all.*

This is a great surprise and a good pick me up after my laptop frying earlier in the week. *

I also just ordered my first "real" knife. *A Kershaw 1660BR Leek for under $29 shipped. *I guess I'm off to a good start as far as knife Collecting goes.

So you aren't even considering returning it for the item that you actually bought & paid for? If you contact them, they may even tell you to keep to to save shipping costs.

If you had received the wrong item and it was cheaper, you'd probably be bitching & moaning about being ripped-off, wouldn't you?

Honesty goes both ways.

I would call them and offer to pay the difference. If you don't notify them I can just about guarantee an error like this will cause several other people to have a less than pleasant day.

Well my main concern was missing a hone honestly. I believe legally if the item I received is of higher value I can keep it at my discretion as it was an error on their part. I ordered from Amazon and with them being a large company and having great customer service I doubt they would ask for it back. I admit though that I probably should have told them they sent the wrong one but at this point after using it (and the item arriving opened) I doubt they would want it back. Thank you though seriously for keeping me an honest man as I appreciate it. After writing this and thinking about it some more I will give them a call just in case.

Getting a item that you didn't pay for and bragging about it is not too cool. Don't think you will find many here that approve.
(edited to add) I see that you will give them a call, good for you.

Some times Even though you order from Amazon, it is sold by an individual. I found it ironic that you at first were upset that it wasn't right, then you were happy that someone else was out the money...

Good Call on making the Call!

I agree with this.

OTOH, I'm rather sure Amazon wouldn't request a return on it even if he told them, but would accept one if he insisted. Should he? I guess that's a personal ethics question.

I don't know if I'd *insist* but I'd definitely offer. If they don't want to pay for return shipping then its their call.

I am not sure that insisting is really the ethical thing to do.

I gave them a call and they told me to keep the item for calling and being honest. I apologize if it seemed as if I was bragging in my post before. That was not my intention. I was just a little excited as I had a bad week and then after I ordered the Deluxe 5 stone I read that the diamond set would better fit my needs. I guess excitement got the best of me and I should proof read my posts for how they can be interpreted before posting as well as think it through if I should post at all haha. Again I apologize if I came across as having a low moral standard as that was not my intention and that is not who I am nor how I want to be perceived.

Also, thank you all for calling me out on keeping it without calling. That was a dumb moment for me and I am glad to be a member of this forum where honesty is encouraged rather than discouraged.

The law is often strange, but not in this case. If you deliver goods in error, you are entitled to get them back in all fifty states - if you want to bother.

Contrast that with a situation where someone sends you goods knowing you did not order them. That used to happen lots, but not after a federal law turned that maneuver into a gift.

Ah, I guess I was thinking of the second situation you mentioned. I heard tales of a certain cigar company doing that in which they would ship a box of expensive premium cigars to "customers" and demand payment. Very shady and I guess that is also where I heard what you stated where it is now a gift. Thanks for clearing that up for me as I am glad I called before someone came looking for money or the set. I doubt Amazon would on such a small dollar amount but you never know. I have certainly heard crazier stories haha.

Welcome to the forum Wallbright :D

I bought a set of 50 slim cd cases and they came to me with like 5-10 being broken. emailed the company i bought them from, they told me they would send me a new set and to keep the old ones. so i got like 90 cd cases for the price of 50.

as i type this story it seems less relevant, but i thought i'd share anyways.

Three or four times now I've ordered from a large internet vendor something and it arrived either not to the specs on the website or with a problem, called them to report the problem (always politely, of course) and they just refunded my money and told me to keep the item. Now, granted, this was on items that only cost $10-20.

Congrats on the Lansky and the the Kershaw! I just picked up a Leek 1660H3 and love it. It's my second Kershaw.
I have had the Lansky system for over a year and I love it too! I have the regular one though not the diamond one.
It takes a little to get it down but I recommend it to anyone thinking about sharpening knives.

I don't judge other peoples's honesty, I only judge my own. And I don't consider myself qualified to judge anyone else anyway. That's just me.

Speaking as someone who has worked in shipping, I applaud the OP for notifying the company of their mistake. Because some shipping clerk somewhere would probably have to answer for the discrepency in inventory if someone noticed. It's always possible that the OP's item got mixed up with someones elses and that other customer may have called to complain. When I was a shipping clerk, my boss was a major A-HOLE, and if I had made a mistake like that and couldn't account for where the missing item went, he might very well give me a very hard time about it (and as I recall, this did happen a few times).
